The Founding Chairman of the Malaysia Global Business Forum (MGBF), Nordin Abdullah, recently spoke to Gerard Ratnam and Jessy Chahal on Bernama TV’s leading English talk show “The Brief” about the new Prime Minister and the ongoing developments in Malaysia.

“Congratulations to the Prime Minister and congratulations to Malaysia. And I also think congratulations need to go to the process and the fact that the constitution reigned supreme with His Royal Highness the Agong playing a pivotal role,” said Nordin.

“While it may have seemed like an eternity, it really just took a few days to form this unity government. Now I think, with the numbers that Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim is enjoying with this unity government, he would be able to form a very strong cabinet in terms of the people who were elected. There is also the possibility of appointing Senators and bringing additional competent people into the cabinet.

“I think from the perspective of business, we’re seeing a lot of businesses reacting positively in the last 24 hours. I think they are looking forward to a new era of Malaysian businesses as well.”

When asked about “Technocrats”, Nordin who is also the Vice Chairman of the Malaysia Australia Business Council stated, “Well it is about creating a balance. The elected leaders of the country need to play a role, and maybe there’s a role for one or two “Technocrats”. At the same time, we can’t discount the strength of the Malaysian public service – there’s a lot of strength there. It’s going to be about creating teamwork between the elected officials, the government servants, and the private sector to drive the Malaysian economy forward.”

Nordin continued to expand on the needs of the local and international business community, “The first thing that comes to mind is policy continuity. And if there are policy changes, of course, “Reformasi” or “Reformation” will need to take place in some of the policies that need to be developed; it is hoped that business and the broader stakeholders will be engaged. It will take more time but getting things right is better than rushing to finish things and missing the mark.”

The Malaysia Global Business Forum (MGBF) empowers stakeholders at the intersection of international and Malaysian business.
