IJM Land renovates the home of an underprivileged family in Seremban

Home is where the heart is where you find comfort within your living space. With the staunch mission to provide that comfort and enlighten the lives of the underprivileged, IJM Land Berhad, a leading property developer in Seremban 2, surprised a family of five who are residing in Seremban with a fully refurbished home during its annual Home Rehabilitation programme (myHome).

Staying true to its commitment to “Bringing Life to Ordinary Spaces”, IJM Land is persistent to provide a safe and conducive living environment for those in dire need of help. Led by Mr Chai Kian Soon, Senior General Manager of IJM Land Berhad, the charity programme returned for the 13th year to improve the lives of a 42-year-old single mother, Madam Wan Chew Liean and her four children. Losing her husband suddenly due to lung and heart failure in 2020, Wan has been trying to make ends meet considering her meagre income as a newspaper distributor.

Although having received financial assistance from the Social Welfare Department (JKM), Wan is unable to keep up with the expense of her home after being affected by heavy rain and under attack by termites which left the house in a poor condition.

“We first met Wan and her beautiful family during IJM Land’s Chinese New Year charity programme in 2021 – that was when we discovered that her house was in dilapidated condition and we needed to do something to ensure she and her family have a secure place to live in that is not only cosy but also fully equipped with the basic necessities,” said Mr Chai.

Wan and her family were all smiles when they were gifted with their refurbished home after one and a half months of working on its repairs. IJM Land carried out immense repair work which involved painting, fixing and replacing new roofing, providing a well-equipped toilet and installing a septic tank with underground piping, repairing external timber walls and replacing them with cement sand board, installing precast concrete drain and chain link fencing with gate.

Upon receiving the certificate of completion for their home during the handover ceremony, IJM Land also equipped them with other essential items including a desktop for kids’ learning, electrical items and some groceries as well as face masks to lessen their burdens in these challenging times. Additionally, the property developer also received huge support from its partners, including Golden Hover Group of Companies who contributed furniture items worth RM3,500, FWT Construction Sdn Bhd, Jotun Paints (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and Midas Touch PTL.

“Our goal is to identify the crucial ways by which we might open the door to a better life for those who are in difficult situations. We want to make their dreams come true, hence everyone has put their heart into this project to make it a successful one. Nevertheless, we are grateful for our partners as their continuous support and contribution have brought positive transitions to many underprivileged families in Seremban,” Mr Chai concluded.

Closely linked with its motto ‘We Make Good Better’, IJM Land’s Home Rehabilitation programme is its primary Corporate Social Responsibility activity that is carried out yearly. For more information on myHome programme, please visit http://seremban2.ijmland.com/.

Interested visitors can now book their slots from the website, where they can select the available slots for up to 90 days from the day they are applying. The factory is located at 7 Senoko Ave and welcomes everyone during the plant’s working hours.

The tour has fully trained personnel that will provide a presentation on the background of the company and its products. Visitors will also get to watch a scientific documentary on the benefits of probiotics or an animated video for younger sightseers on the role L. casei strain Shirota plays in the maintenance of the digestive system. One of the highlights of this tour is that every visitor will receive a chance to taste delicious healthy Yakult drinks, fresh off the line.

Visitors are also able to view the entire high-tech production process through a glass-walled viewing gallery. The glass walls were specially constructed to provide clear viewing while preventing contamination and accidents at the production site so that visitors can immerse in the behind-the-scenes operations with ease and no worries about having to watch their steps.

Just like the exclusive drinks, Yakult’s tour also has a history with the activity dating back to 1987. Yakult Singapore has been welcoming visitors for educational tours of its state-of-the-plant for over three decades and keeps it ongoing so customers can gain insights into the making of the Yakult drinks.

GE15: Favourable political weather for kingmakers

The current political weather that is rife with desperation and a highly divided landscape is favourable to aspiring political kingmakers.

It is expected by many that no single coalition would gain a significant majority post the 15th General Election (GE15).

For example, Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy president Rafizi Ramli had pointed to a potential hung Parliament due to the same reason, while Bersih expects the need for another Confidence and Supply Agreement (CSA) or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the GE15 winner with other parties or coalitions in order to achieve political stability.

However, king-making benefits, if not rely, on a slim-majority situation, allowing any side to gain victory depending on where the kingmakers put their support, giving them significant bargaining power.

Polling from various sources appear to put Pakatan Harapan (PH) ahead of the other coalitions, and uncertainties loom over Barisan Nasional which is seeing strong competition from both PH and Perikatan Nasional. The latter is also seen as the alternative avenue for Malay voters who don’t want BN, but are also hesitant to support PH.

For example, we can observe this from the online polling result from StrawPolls for Bangi parliamentary constituency (P102) as of 1230pm, November 16, 2022, which showed a very close fight between the candidate from the Democratic Action Party (DAP) under the PH banner and the candidate from Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) under PN banner.

Other candidates, including the BN candidate, were left far behind.

Understanding weaknesses in simple online polls, we assume the sampling is representative in that it was only among the people who vote in Bangi and random enough to avoid sampling bias.

The roughly 50% Malays and 50% non-Malays makeup of the Bangi constituency, coupled with what is likely an almost equally strong anti-DAP sentiment and pro-Anwar sentiments would explain the close fight observed in the poll.

This is but an example of what could happen nationwide, depending on the makeup of that particular location.

In places where neither PN nor BN has an edge or either one has a slight edge (and the cumulative result thereof, or rather, the assumed outcome of a loss against PH) would set the scene for the strengthening of the narrative of a PN-BN mega coalition.

This partnership of convenience or necessity could form a combined majority for them to be in power, ensuring PH doesn’t get Putrajaya.

This is not a surprise as it was reported that the PAS secretary-general, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan reportedly hinted at a plausible PN-BN partnership or a coalition post the 15th General Election (GE15) to form a government. Although Takiyuddin appears to have taken back his remarks, it does give a glimpse of what could be.

Anything is possible in politics, and last-minute U-turns are common. Especially when political survival and careers are at stake.

Following this scenario, and assuming the PN-BN mega partnership results in a slim majority, this sets the stage for aspiring kingmakers to make their desired chess play.

Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA), a coalition led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, isn’t seen as a major contender compared to PH, BN, and PN. But, history has shown that it is unwise to underestimate the two-time former prime minister.

Should PN-BN mega coalition come to fruition, it is not unthinkable that a seasoned politician such as Mahathir could devise a strategic partnership with his ally Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal to bring in Parti Warisan (Warisan), and probably coerce other Sabah/Sarawak parties to swing the majority back to PH.

Should such a scenario be successful, PH would be indebted to Mahathir, allowing Mahathir to exert significant influence at the highest-ranking cabinet positions, while Sabah/Sarawak would be able to realise their dream of having a deputy prime minister (DPM) post in the cabinet.

This is not unlikely because PH has reportedly committed to more than one DPM post. In fact, three DPM post was mentioned. That fits the scenario just fine: one DPM from PH, one from GTA, and one as Sabah/Sarawak representative.

In this scenario, we can imagine the three DPM posts as such: Rafizi from PH, Mukhriz Mahathir from Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), and Shafie Apdal.

Therefore, GTA and Sabah/Sarawak become the kingmakers. Under this scenario, everyone’s dream comes through.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim finally becomes the PM, and he can appoint Rafizi as one of his deputies. Past general elections have shown the trend of BN losing popularity votes but the coalition remained in power because of the split in the votes of the opposition. Therefore, the people would be happy if the popular votes also translated to the country’s top leadership.

Through this hypothetical chess play, Mahathir gets to solidify his party and coalition, which is relatively new and untested, for future politics in Malaysia through his son.

Shafie Apdal gets to represent West Malays to push for Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) reforms and other things Sabah/Sarawak has been fighting for.

However, this is still a volatile combination as there are too many strong characters. The future will still be uncertain until and unless leaders are more united, and rule others justly.

Note that the above is just one scenario.

Potential kingmakers such as GTA and Sabah/Sarawak parties can also swing other ways. As kingmakers, they may give their support to whichever side can give the best deal to them.

The deals and politicking will go into high gear within the final days before polling and will continue right after 19 November.

A slim majority situation is bad for stability but is the ideal situation for kingmakers.

We can only hope they would cast their support based on what is best for the people and the nation, and not merely driven by personal interests.

Mary Kay Inc. announces Forest of Hope Film Festival selection and tree planting impact

Mary Kay Inc., a global advocate for sustainability, is proud to announce that Forest of Hope—a documentary sponsored by the company to shed light on the fight to save forests and tell the story of conservation and women’s empowerment—has been officially selected for four film festivals.

Forest of Hope was written, directed, and produced by an all-female team and screened at La Femme International Film Festival, a premiere film festival celebrating, supporting, and advancing content creation by women producers, writers, and directors from around the world. It was also selected for the North Dakota Environmental Rights Film Festival, Hot Springs International Women’s Film Festival, and the Green Film Festival.

Mary Kay served as an executive producer of the short film in partnership with The Nature Conservancy to highlight the story of Angelica, leader of Mujeres Unidas Para La Conservacion de Laguna de Sanchez, and a group of female entrepreneurs as they combat environmental challenges in the surrounding areas of the city of Monterrey.

Forest of Hope takes viewers to a small mountain town near the city of Monterrey surrounded by Cumbres National Park, a natural reserve known as “The Lungs of the Region.” It is a place where fires and clear cutting have destroyed over 30% of the forest and which is prone to other ecological challenges such as hurricanes, flooding, and issues with water supply.

Other common issues facing the area are heavy stormwater runoff that affects the urban infrastructure, local livestock, and the citizens of the community. With all of these natural setbacks, this group of women have dedicated themselves to restoring the vegetation cover and producing native tree species in nurseries to maintain the area’s environmental resiliency.

Tree planting and reforestation are proven solutions to combat climate change, water quality and quantity, biodiversity health, and human health. To date, Mary Kay has planted more than 1.2 million trees across the world. Mary Kay’s conservation work with trees is measurable and creates a lasting impact.

Mary Kay’s most recent tree report outlines three cumulative benefits to planting trees through work that has been completed in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation:

          • Carbon: Planting, protecting, and managing trees absorbs carbon. As trees grow, carbon is removed from the atmosphere into trunks, roots, and branches.
            • Metric Tons of CO2 Sequestered to Date: 1,115,522
          • Water: Trees and forests play a vital role in water quality and quantity. Healthy trees and forests reduce soil erosion, filter stormwater and agricultural irrigation, enhance rainfall infiltration, and reduce surface runoff
            • Gallons Avoided Water Runoff: 138,014,028 (equal to 1,568,341 people with clean water)
          • Air: Trees produce oxygen that we breathe. In addition, trees remove air pollution by lowering air temperature, by releasing water into the atmosphere, and by filtering particulates.
            • Tons of Air Pollutants Removed: 6,123

FedEx Contributes to Sustainability of Local Indigenous Community in Malaysia

FedEx volunteers upgrade kindergarten facilities using sustainable materials

SC Chong (bottom, third from left) along with FedEx Express Malaysia volunteers at the unveiling ceremony of the completed perimeter wall of Tabika Kemas Kampung Orang Asli Sg Rambai.

FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, supported with upgrading and enhancing the local kindergarten facility in Pulau Carey, Selangor which serves the underprivileged indigenous communities around the area.

As part of the global FedEx Cares program, around 50 FedEx volunteers came together to produce ecobricks and rebuild a perimeter wall of the Tabika Kemas Kampung Orang Asli Sg Rambai, in collaboration with Treat Every Environment Special (TrEES), a sustainability-focused environmental organization, and the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA). The enhancement was recently unveiled by FedEx, alongside key representatives from TrEES, JAKOA as well as senior leaders of the indigenous community.

The program was kicked-off with an ecobrick-making workshop, where FedEx volunteers learned how to make ecobricks by compacting plastic waste into 500 ml PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate) bottles, each weighing no less than 200g. The perimeter wall was constructed from bricks as well as 1,500 ecobricks, creating a safer playground to enjoy more outdoor activities, for 36 students aged between 4 to 6 years.

“At FedEx, we are committed to sustainability throughout our operations.  The steps we take today, will positively impact future generations. In the same way, this program not only helps the underserved local communities but also raises awareness around the use of sustainable materials. As children will use the facility every day, we hope that the use of ecobricks will help educate the next generation about the importance of sustainability”, said SC Chong, Managing Director, FedEx Express in Malaysia.

Leela Panikkar, Director of TrEES said, “Through environmental education and building of the sustainable ecobricks perimeter wall for the indigenous community, we hope to reconnect the urban community in supporting the underserved, whilst inculcating green habits to reduce our plastic footprint. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to FedEx and all the volunteers, as well as Pn. Dahlia Permid, Deputy Director of JAKOA Selangor & Wilayah Persekutuan for the assistance and support in upgrading the kindergarten, ensuring that the children have a safe, secured space for play.”

The tabika serves three local communities – Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Rambai, Kampung Orang Asli Kepau Laut as well as Kampung Melayu with a population of over 650 people from around 180 families. Villagers from the indigenous communities belong to the Mah Meri sub-ethnic group who traditionally work as fishermen, oil palm smallholders and weavers.

FedEx supports this initiative under its FedEx Cares global community engagement program. Through FedEx Cares, FedEx supports non-profit organizations working to solve social challenges in local communities and is committed to positively impacting 50 million people around the globe by the company’s 50th anniversary in 2023.

RICOH embraces ESG with new Smart Office Concept

First digital hub in Ricoh Asia Pacific

Lion dance performance after the launch ceremony complete with Smart & Hybrid Workplace banners and the God of Prosperity.

11 November 2022, Shah Alam – Ricoh Malaysia today unveiled its exclusive Smart and Hybrid Workplace in Shah Alam, Selangor based on the ‘green objectives’ aim of implementing environmental best practices in the workplace.

Ricoh’s newly introduced workplace concept integrates ESG (environmental, social, and governance) goals to support a “climate safe future,” as well nurture and encourage an office digital culture that embeds sustainability.

Ms. Alice Lee & Mr. Joji Tokunaga showed the modular office arrangement that features hot desks and scalable furniture layouts that can be moved around for better utilization of space.

RICOH has a solid international reputation for providing cutting-edge information management and digital technology. The modern digital approach aims to reduce operating costs for prospective clients, while increasing organisational revenue.

Digital transformation is about people, not just technology. “Enabling employee engagement via creativity generates data-driven insights, greater internal communication, and increased productivity and profitability,” said Ms Alice Lee, managing director of Ricoh (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd, during her opening remarks.

Ricoh’s cutting-edge technological design enables its hybrid workforce, user-friendly solutions for a seamless workflow, and resilient IT infrastructures with cyber-attack prevention capabilities.

RICOH is on a journey to assist businesses and organisations in making the transition to this new future, with a focus on digitization and digitalization. Because it enables information to mix and be processed with the same efficiency, digitization is crucial for data processing, storage, and transmission. Data may now be shared and retrieved, propagated without loss, and moved to new formats as needed thanks to digitization.

The security and secrecy of a document are improved by digitization. Only specific users can access papers if necessary because scanned documents can be tracked. Paper dissolves every time it is touched manually, hence information recorded on it is a degradable kind of information.

Businesses can generate organisational change, develop new business models, and unlock new value from data that has been pooled through digitization with the use of automation and digital technologies.

“Our ‘Fulfillment through Work’ vision is guided by Ricoh’s three principles: loyalty to people, patriotism, and a love of work. Ricoh Malaysia welcomes and looks forward to collaborating with key partners, clients, and investors to transform existing conventional workplaces into smart and hybrid environments towards a complete digital transformation”, Lee concluded.

Muhammad Azmi Zulkifli, Chief Executive Officer of InvestKL said: “Companies are aware of the importance of greening practices and the benefit it brings from an economic and environmental standpoint. I am pleased to learn that leading companies such as Ricoh are paving the way in creating a smart, sustainable, and holistic workspace right here in Greater KL. Greater KL offers ample greening opportunities and is indeed an ideal location for companies to realise their sustainability goals and ESG agenda. Congratulations and we look forward to facilitating Ricoh’s continued investment in Malaysia and regionally”.

It has become a critical component of Ricoh’s corporate strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 63 percent by 2030 and achieve carbon neutral by 2050. These assertions are supported by the technology that the corporation is now prioritising.

From left; Mr. Joji Tokunaga, President of Ricoh Asia Pacific and Latin America, Ms. Alice Lee, Managing Director of Ricoh (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. and Mr. Steven Burger, General Manager of Business Enablement, Ricoh Asia Pacific & Latin America.

This momentous event was officiated by Mr Joji Tokunaga, Ricoh’s regional managing director, and Ms Alice Lee, managing director of Ricoh (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd with the aim to support SMEs and companies in meeting ESG to draw the attention of investors and customers.

A huge thank you to all who signed up and also to those who sent in their GPS route maps for the NFT. You did not just run for health but you also ran for a good cause by giving back to society and those in need through the NFT artwork auction. Together, we can do more for the communities in need and I hope more will join us in future to give back to society,” said Kyle Choi, Managing Director of Coway Malaysia.

He added that Coway is committed to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN), covering clean water and sanitation; good health and well-being; gender equity; quality education; life below water and life on land. Doing our part as corporate citizens, partnering with experts and NGOs from respective fields, to create a better living environment for our future generations.

Participants were excited to be able to participate in the Coway Run 2022 on-ground event after a two-year-long hiatus

During the physical run, the team from home-grown creative art brand, Loka Made, known for creating Malaysian-inspired art led the participants in painting a huge canvas with vibrant colours. The canvas was then revealed to be a landscape comprising various Malaysian landmarks including the iconic Perdana Putra, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan in Perak, the Colourful Colonial Houses Of Georgetown in Penang and others.

Those participating in the virtual run were also able to discover Malaysia’s iconic landmarks as digital badges were unlocked as they ran and completed milestone challenges. The digital badges were designed based on Malaysian landmarks as seen on the canvas. Unlike the physical run, there was no distance limit to the virtual run and participants literally ran to their hearts’ content. Numerous personal boundaries and records were broken and achieved and this was reflected in the number of digital badges unlocked.
