The Japanese ace carded rounds of 70, 69 and 66 for an overall three-day total of 207 to walk away as the outright winner, leaving his opponents trailing by a wide margin.
Malaysia’s Liew Connor Axel Kai gave the local fans reason to cheer by coming in second with a total score of 216 (72,73,71) while another Japanese player Daichi Hayashi finished third on count back despite carding a total score of 216 (72,72,72).
The overall Girls title saw an almost clean sweep by players from the Philippines with Brittany Pauline Tamayo hogging the limelight with a total score of 222 after rounds of 76, 73 and 73.
Her fellow countrywoman Lisa Angeles Sarines finished second on yet another countback after finishing with a total score of 222 (71,77,74) while Malaysia’s Nur Batrisyia Balqis finished third with a total score of 224 (75,75,74).
Philippines also walked away with the Team title with an overall score of 655 over the three days while Thailand and Malaysia finished second and third respectively with scores of 658 and 661.
A total of 112 Elite Junior golfers from 11 countries, including host nation Malaysia, competed in the SportExcel International Junior Golf Championships that was held from Jan 14 to 16.
The Championships, held at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Resort from Jan 14 to 15, will feature several age group competitions for the boys and girls, starting from the age of 9 to 21.
The 112 total number of players was made up of 64 Boys and 48 Girls comprising 54 from Malaysia and 58 from 11 foreign countries. The Boys and Girls participated in the 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-18 and 19-21 age group categories.
SportExcel executive director C. Sivanandan was delighted that the Championships attracted an overwhelming response in terms of participation. Sivanandan added that “SportExcel was excited to host the Championships that would certainly help unearth young talented golfers among Malaysian children”.
He added that the championships had been gracefully supported by Tourism Malaysia while the players were given Tourism Malaysia souvenirs at the official welcoming ceremony. Tourism Malaysia also provided a city tour for 65 players and parents from overseas as an effort to promote the country.
