A Collective Initiative for DJs #DJsJagaDJs

Since the MCO, which was implemented on the 18th of March, more than 95% of all DJs have been directly impacted though loss of full-time jobs and gig related income has come to complete stop.

As you know entertainment outlets of various genre are closed and events or gatherings are no longer allowed for national safety purposes.  We understand that decision but at the same time we are all hoping that something can change so that we can all start earning a livelihood again.

Deemed as “non-essential” and with nobody paying attention to our collective plight, the once an integral part of the entertainment and events industry DJs have done what they can to keep the music playing for their loyal fans. Mostly via online sessions on social media yet there is a growing feeling of despair and hopelessness.

Like many, DJs have resorted to doing what we can to make ends meet, this part of the gig economy has become overcrowded, we need a better solution. As such we propose the government consider the following proposals:

Allow DJs to work with the 24 private and 44 government owned radio stations to provide music content performed by DJs at suitable times. As many as 15,000 DJs of various genres of music and languages can be designated accordingly.

Setting up of broadcast centers in tourist hotspots across Malaysia as a form of Hip/Trendy/Cool info centers where DJs on rotation play music as well as broadcast relevant and current information about the fight against COVID19 and promoting the local businesses that need some publicity too.

DJs can be a leading voice in the coming months as part in the recovery of the heavily impacted tourism and entertainment ecosystems.  Sectors that contribute heavily to the GDP of the nation.  It’s time to temporary repurpose and innovate to solve the problems of today and tomorrow with dignity and compassion.

DJs can contribute more than mood music, they are professionals who utilize the latest software and digital sound equipment worth in some cases millions, don’t let our relaxed demeanor and our smooth voices fool you into thinking otherwise.

Ministers and community leaders the next time you give a speech at an event remember it was a professional team of DJs and sound engineers who made it possible for you to be heard, we only ask now that you hear our voice and work towards a collective solution.

    Yours in Hope,

    #DJsJagaDJs
