Malaysia’s Sunway Sanctuary has clinched two top accolades at the 13th Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation for excellence in senior living solutions.
The premium senior living residence, part of Sunway Healthcare Group, was named Facility of the Year – Active Ageing for the second consecutive year, and also took home the award for Operator of the Year – Senior Living (New Entrants) at a ceremony held in Singapore on 9 April.
Organised by Ageing Asia, the awards recognise outstanding innovation in eldercare across the Asia-Pacific region. Sunway Sanctuary’s recognition places it ahead of strong competition from countries such as Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.

Its repeat win in the Facility of the Year – Active Ageing category highlights its continued success in offering residents a holistic and engaging environment. Facilities at Sunway Sanctuary include a heated saltwater infinity pool, fitness centre, karaoke lounge, games room, art therapy, health talks, and a mini theatre — all designed to encourage social connection, wellness, and purpose among seniors.
The second award, Operator of the Year – Senior Living (New Entrants), recognises Sunway Sanctuary’s Build-Own-Operate model, which ensures high quality and consistency in care and service delivery. The win also reflects its commitment to setting new standards in the senior living sector.

“This double win is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to transforming senior living into a vibrant and enriching experience. It comes at a meaningful time as Sunway Sanctuary celebrates its second anniversary on 6 June 2025,” said Leonard Theng, general manager of Sunway Sanctuary.
“Our focus has always been on redefining retirement living—providing a lifestyle that prioritises wellness, independence, and joy for seniors,” continued Leonard, adding that the double awards affirm Sunway Sanctuary’s dedication to shaping the future of eldercare in Malaysia and beyond.
Located adjacent to the 810-bed Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway Sanctuary offers a range of lifestyle options including Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Post-Hospital Discharge Care — catering to a spectrum of needs for older adults, from active retirees to those requiring light support or short-term recuperative care.
In addition to its two wins, Sunway Sanctuary was also named a finalist in three other categories: Operator of the Year – Active Ageing, Innovation of the Year – Active Ageing on Lifestyle Programme, and Innovation of the Year – Social Engagement.

Leonard also represented Malaysia on the global stage at the 16th World Ageing Festival 2025, where he spoke about the country’s evolving senior care landscape and shared insights on designing senior living communities that foster happiness, health, and independence.
The awards come amid growing demand for premium retirement living in Malaysia, with Sunway Sanctuary seeing increased interest in its short-stay rejuvenation packages, often booked by seniors seeking restorative “staycation” experiences. ![]()
