Hospital Picaso launches integrated cancer centre to improve patient outcomes in Malaysia

Hospital Picaso has officially opened its new Cancer Centre in Petaling Jaya, a purpose-built facility designed to deliver seamless, end-to-end cancer care under one roof. The centre is expected to significantly improve early detection and treatment outcomes for cancer patients in Malaysia by streamlining the entire care journey from diagnosis to recovery.

The launch marks a pivotal step in the hospital’s mission to deliver “Advanced Surgery, Personalised Care”, with the new centre integrating early screening, diagnostics, advanced treatment options, and supportive care into a single, multidisciplinary ecosystem.

“The opening of Hospital Picaso Cancer Centre is more than just the opening of a new facility. By integrating the entire process – from screenings to surgeries – all orchestrated within a single centre, we are redefining the cancer journey through a wholesome approach,” said Dr Mastura Md Yusof, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Hospital Picaso.

This patient-centric model aims to eliminate the fragmentation that often characterises traditional cancer treatment, allowing for faster clinical decisions, reduced delays, and more coordinated, compassionate care.

The timing of the launch is critical. According to the Malaysian Ministry of Health, cancer is the third leading cause of death in the country, with over 65 per cent of cases between 2017 and 2021 diagnosed at late stages (Stage 3 or 4). These statistics underscore the urgent need for early detection and a unified approach to treatment.

“Besides providing effective, seamless medical care, it is important for us that a patient experiences personalised care – where they are treated as individuals with specific needs, have control over their choices and feel that they truly matter throughout their healing journey,” Dr Mastura added. “When specialists collaborate early, from diagnosis through to treatment planning, it leads to more informed decisions, faster interventions and ultimately, better outcomes for the patient.”

The facility provides a full suite of oncology services, including systemic therapies like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy, as well as advanced radiotherapy options. A dedicated Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Department further supports the centre, playing a key role in early detection, precise diagnosis, and real-time treatment planning.

Dr Basri Johan Jeet Abdullah, consultant radiologist and interventional radiologist, emphasised the importance of imaging in personalised care. According to Dr Basri, radiology contributes to precision by identifying patients suitable for interventional procedures, monitoring responses to systemic and localised therapies and providing imaging biomarkers that support early treatment modification – all these elements lead to enhancing clinical pathways, which can be adapted in near real-time, hence improving treatment outcomes.

The integrated model aligns innovation with patient-centred care, offering timely support and medical precision that could redefine cancer treatment in Malaysia.

The Hospital Picaso Cancer Centre is part of the hospital’s broader vision to become a Centre of Excellence for both Advanced Surgery and Integrated Oncology. Located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia, the hospital is equipped with modern operating theatres, intensive care facilities, nuclear medicine services and a full range of diagnostic tools.

With approximately one in eight Malaysians now facing a lifetime risk of developing cancer, the need for such cohesive and compassionate care models has never been more pressing.
