Schneider Electric, the global leader in digital transformation of industrial energy management and automation, is proud to jointly unveil a landmark collaboration with PETRONAS and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) at the launch of the Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy (CEFORE), a pioneering initiative located off the coast of Kuala Terengganu. CEFORE is a proof-of-concept facility that harnesses offshore wind, solar, and wave energy in a community-centric and educational framework to deliver reliable, renewable power, aimed at powering Malaysia’s journey toward a sustainable energy future.

The Centre seamlessly integrates the three renewable energy sources into a microgrid, supported by on-site energy storage and advanced smart energy management systems, ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted supply of renewable electricity. As a floating infrastructure, CEFORE contributes to Malaysia’s Blue Economy strategy under the 13th Malaysia Plan, which promotes sustainable ocean resource use for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and environmental stewardship. This collaboration aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and supports both national and state-level sustainability goals.
As a technology partner, Schneider Electric supported by bringing its digital energy expertise to CEFORE, providing the intelligence needed to manage complex energy flows and integrate energy storage systems. The facility also serves as a testbed for advanced digital grid solutions, automation, and energy storage, which are critical components for strengthening grid reliability and efficiency. With Malaysia’s growing renewable energy penetration and rising industrial demand, CEFORE ensures the grid can host more renewables without compromising reliability.

Eugene Quah, Country President of Schneider Electric Malaysia, shared, “It is truly an honour to be part of this milestone initiative as we work in partnership with PETRONAS. CEFORE is the first-of-its-kind in the world, and it marks a new chapter in Malaysia’s energy landscape, one that embraces offshore mixed renewable energy solutions and sets a bold precedent for the future. Our collaboration with PETRONAS is a testament to our shared commitment to driving decarbonisation and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
Schneider Electric’s technology offerings play an important role in CEFORE’s success. These solutions help seamlessly integrate diverse energy sources, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency. They include:
RM AirSeT (SF6-free Medium Voltage Switchgear),
RM AirSeT is a next-generation medium voltage switchgear that eliminates the use of SF₆ gas (a potent greenhouse gas) by using pure air and vacuum technology. It offers high reliability, safety, and digital connectivity, making it ideal for sustainable grid operations.
Trihal Cast Resin Dry-Type Transformer
Trihal transformers are dry-type, cast resin transformers designed for high performance, safety, and long service life, even in harsh environments. With IoT- enabled thermal monitoring, Trihal transformers provide real-time insights into equipment health, helping reduce downtime and maintenance costs.
Low Voltage Switchboard
Schneider Electric’s low voltage switchboards provide robust and modular energy distribution with high flexibility. Integrated with EcoStruxure, they enable real-time monitoring and control, supporting efficient operations and system scalability.
EcoStruxure™ Power Automation System (EPAS)
This digital substation automation system enhances energy management through advanced monitoring, control, and cybersecurity. Designed for critical infrastructure, it ensures reliable power distribution and efficient integration of renewable energy sources.
ETAP Power Plant Controller
ETAP is a model-driven energy management platform that enables design, operation, and automation of power systems. It uses digital twin technology for predictive simulation, real- time analytics, and intelligent optimization. ETAP supports proactive contro l and situational awareness, making it ideal for managing complex, multi-source renewable energy systems.
As seen in the NETR, Malaysia targets 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050, up from approximately 25 per cent in 2023. CEFORE stands as a scalable blueprint for future energy systems, demonstrating how diverse renewable sources can be integrated to meet this goal.

“CEFORE supports Malaysia’s low-carbon ambitions while delivering tangible benefits to local communities and ecosystems. As a beacon of sustainable development, CEFORE sets the stage for global leadership in offshore renewable energy, and Schneider Electric is proud to help power this transformation,” Eugene added.
