Heriot-Watt University Malaysia honours PETRONAS CEO with honorary degree for leadership in energy and sustainability

    Heriot-Watt University Malaysia marked a momentous occasion at  the Putrajaya Marriott Hotel, where about 110 students graduated across various disciplines.

    At the ceremony, the University’s Pro-Chancellor, Datuk (Dr) Nicol Ann David, conferred degrees upon  graduates from the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS), the School of Social Sciences (SoSS), the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS), and the School of  Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS).

    The ceremony’s highlight was the conferment of an Honorary Doctor of the University (DUniv) upon  Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS,  Malaysia’s national oil and gas company and a Fortune 500 global organisation. The honorary degree  recognised his outstanding contributions to education, sustainable development, energy transition, and  technological innovation as a purpose-driven global leader. Under his stewardship, PETRONAS has  navigated the complexities of the global energy transition while upholding principles of good governance  and environmental responsibility.

    This honorary award also reflects the University’s commitment to recognising leaders whose values align  with Heriot-Watt’s Strategy 2050, which focuses on driving innovation, sustainability, and positive global  impact.

    Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik in his short address during the acceptance of the award, said: “The world that awaits this graduating class is an intimidating one – it is a world that is defined by persistent uncertainty and constant disruption. However, I would also contend that it is a world equally endowed with fantastic opportunities for each of you to seize. As you each pursue success in your respective fields,  what will set you apart are the purpose and values that guide you as well as the positive impact that you  will bring to the people and communities that you serve, through your integrity, leadership and courage.”

    Professor Richard A. Williams, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University said: “At  Heriot-Watt, we take pride in cultivating graduates who think critically, act responsibly, and lead with purpose. This graduation is not only a celebration of individual achievement but also of our collective effort to build a better, more sustainable future through education, innovation, and global collaboration.

    We extend our warmest congratulations to Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik for receiving this well deserved recognition, and to all our graduates for reaching this significant milestone.”

    Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi, Provost and Chief Executive Officer of Heriot-Watt University  Malaysia, added: “Graduation marks both an ending and a beginning. At Heriot-Watt, we aim to empower our students to live with purpose and compassion, equipped with the knowledge and mindset to make meaningful contributions to society.
