Western Australia has expanded its footprint in Southeast Asia with the launch of a new trade and investment office in Kuala Lumpur, reinforcing its commitment to deeper regional collaboration.
The launch coincides with a week-long mission to Malaysia and Singapore led by Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson, aimed at strengthening partnerships in innovation, energy, and research.

“This mission reinforces the Cook Government’s commitment to building strong regional partnerships that support innovation, investment and economic diversification across the State,” Minister Dawson said.
“Western Australia has strong and enduring ties with our regional neighbours, and this visit will further strengthen our partnerships in energy, innovation and research.”
The delegation will attend three major events: the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit in Kuala Lumpur, followed by the Singapore International Energy Week and the Singapore Week of Innovation and Technology (SWITCH).
Renewed engagement with ASEAN
This marks Western Australia’s first ministerial visit to Malaysia since 2019. The new trade office is expected to help WA businesses connect with Malaysian and ASEAN partners in sectors such as energy transition, medtech, research, and advanced manufacturing.
In Singapore, the delegation will build on earlier discussions centred on renewable energy and technology collaboration – areas where WA aims to position itself as a reliable partner for Southeast Asia’s green and digital growth.
Strengthening regional connections
The Kuala Lumpur office forms part of WA’s broader strategy to diversify trade links beyond traditional markets. By establishing a permanent presence in Malaysia, the state hopes to create new pathways for joint ventures, research partnerships and cross-border investment.
The mission also provides a platform for WA start-ups and research institutions to showcase their expertise to ASEAN stakeholders. For Malaysia and Singapore, closer collaboration with WA offers access to resources, technology transfer and sustainable project development opportunities.
Regional outlook
Analysts view the move as part of a wider trend of Australian states seeking direct engagement with ASEAN economies, particularly in sectors aligned with the region’s decarbonisation and digitalisation agendas.
As Southeast Asia accelerates its push for innovation-led growth, Western Australia’s presence in Kuala Lumpur could serve as a new bridge linking Australia’s west coast capabilities with ASEAN’s expanding economic networks. ![]()
