Malaysian Parliament: 88 per cent success rate in trainees joining construction industry

    Igan MP Ahmad Johnie Zawawi has asked the Senior Minister of Works to state the number of trainees of the Construction Academy of Malaysia (ABM) who have ventured into the construction sector and the extent to which this academy has been able to provide skilled local manpower following the Government’s efforts to reduce its dependence on foreign workers in the construction sector, especially in Sarawak.

    In response, the Deputy Minister of Works YB Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup stated the institution has done various studies in the subject and three programs that include Youth Competency Skills Training, Construction Skills Training and Competency Program for employees and retrenched workers, and CIDB’s Apprenticeship Program, which runs for two to eight months before being deployed in the community for three months.

    The Youth Competency Skills Training drew a total of 22,284 participants with 3,161 being from Sarawak. According to 2020 research, about 88 per cent of programme participants successfully entered the construction business, with Sarawak reporting an 83 per cent marketability rate.
