As part of Heriot-Watt University’s 200th Anniversary and history of widening access to education, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (“HWUM” or the “University”) has introduced the 1821 Appeal Project Malaysia to support students from B40 communities.

HWUM will be awarding 20 full scholarships including cost of living subsidy through the
initiative to students from these communities, in the next two years.

Through the 1821 Appeal Project Malaysia, the University aims to narrow the education gap
and to provide equal access to high-quality UK education through Heriot-Watt University to
these students.

The opportunity is extended to talented SPM, STPM, and UEC students, enabling them to
improve their quality of life and attain their dreams. The University aspires to extend the
initiative to deserving students until the year 2035.

HWUM Provost and Chief Executive Officer Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi, says: “Many
students from B40 families in Malaysia do not have the opportunity to access the world-class, global education they deserve for a multitude of reasons caused by their families’ financial position.

“Through a ground-breaking new programme of scholarships which include pastoral care,
students are mentored by senior students throughout their studies, our 1821 Appeal Project Malaysia aims to support more young Malaysians from underserved segments of our community to study with us, increasing equal opportunities for these students to discover their purpose in life, and to mobilise that purpose into positive impact on the world,” he added.

HWUM launched the HWUM 1821 Appeal Project with an Aspiration Workshop that was
attended by over 50 students from all over Malaysia. The Aspiration workshop is a global platform for students from underserved communities to learn and develop leadership skills from HWUM, in preparation for their examinations, study life, leading to the selection process of any scholarship programme offered by the University.

During the workshop, Professor Mushtak encouraged students to use positive language to
share empowering stories to impact the world. He also discussed the power of gratitude,
shared tips on remaining positive and resilient, and time management to future-proof their
dreams.

The students were also very interactive throughout the workshop where they shared positive messages with each other. “I am grateful and pleased that I attended this meaningful and empowering workshop,” said a student participant during the virtual Aspiration Workshop.

At HWUM, students are empowered to become future-ready and purpose-driven leaders
beyond academic excellence; all of which are part of its unique Positive Education approach. Heriot-Watt University Malaysia will be organising the next series of the Aspiration Workshop in February 2022, which is a Study Camp focusing on revisions of subjects to prepare students for their examination.

Students from B40 families are invited to participate and applications for
the scholarship are currently open for deserving SPM, STPM and UEC students to join our
Foundation and Undergraduate programmes.

“I Know You’re Somewhere So Far” solo art exhibition by Mulaika Nordin officially launched

Art exhibition “I Know You’re Somewhere So Far” comprising of 63 works of art completed in four years by one of Malaysia’s leading young abstract artists, Mulaika Nordin, was officially launched by Nori Abdullah Badawi at KEN Gallery in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

Subscribe to our Telegram channel to get a daily dose of business and lifestyle news from NHA – News Hub Asia!

In her second solo exhibition, Mulaika explores concepts of disconnect and isolation from the lens of an empathic teenage artist as she navigated a constantly changing environment culminating in the period of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The young artist, who turns 18 in the middle of the show, paid homage to her teenage years as she enters adulthood and begins to venture into the real world.

Despite the show’s overarching dark themes, it acts as an ode and a closure to Mulaika’s childhood, creating an optimistic nod towards the experiences from this chapter of her life.

Nori Abdullah Badawi said, “I hope everyone takes something away from the show; give yourselves permission to feel. Maybe ask yourself what would these situations look like for you if you could paint? What is ‘Semangat’ to you? What about darkness in this pandemic? Take the time to feel – after all it is all of Mulaika’s feelings that have brought all of this to life. Now it’s your turn.”

“There has always been a sensitivity about her – a remarkable ability to see and feel more. Now that she’s bigger and the world is slowly having a better understanding of those who aren’t typical, we know she’s an empath. I believe that this fact, all these things that hit Mulaika – too much at times – causing waves and explosions, to quote Mulaika herself, have surely made her the artist that she is today,” stated Nori, when speaking at the launch.

A striking component of this exhibition is how Mulaika depicts the light and dark side of human nature and modern-day society. The works provide an insight into not only the young artists’ thoughts on the matter at hand but is the output of the collective consciousness that rings true on a societal level.

Mulaika said, “I Know You’re Somewhere So Far is a mirror. I made these works as a way to express myself but also as an observation of the world around me.”

There has been a dramatic increase of the prevalence of mental health and psychosocial problems globally since the COVID-19 pandemic started, due to many reasons including lockdowns causing physical disconnect and isolation, on top of the emotional strains caused by financial and economic problems.

The youth today, remains highly connected over social media, which juxtaposes the way the pandemic is dealt with – to physically isolate people as a shield from the virus – that naturally creates a disconnect and the unfortunate consequence of suicide. This highlights the importance of conversations, awareness and resolutions surrounding this topic, especially to remove the stigma and taboo around mental health and suicide.

Mulaika’s artwork expresses issues of mental health, with works such as Every 40 Seconds, which is a commentary on suicide rates; and Homosapiens and Slave of the 21st Century that touches on the realities of the society as we know it today.

I Know You’re Somewhere So Far” exhibition runs until 19 December 2021 at the KEN Gallery in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, and admission is free. For more information visit www.mulaika.com.

Grab to celebrate public listing milestone with employees and partners in first-ever NASDAQ opening bell ceremony in southeast asia

Grab Holdings Limited (Nasdaq: GRAB) (“Grab”), a leading superapp in Southeast Asia1, is celebrating its milestone public listing with Grab employees, driver-, delivery- and merchant-partners in Nasdaq’s first-ever opening bell ceremony to be hosted in the region.

Subscribe to our Telegram channel to get a daily dose of business and lifestyle news from NHA – News Hub Asia!

Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling, co-founders of Grab, will be joined onstage in Singapore during the opening bell ceremony by representatives of the Grab driver-, delivery- and merchant-partner communities, who were on the frontlines transporting people, preparing as well as delivering food and essential goods, especially during critical stay-home pandemic periods. These Grab partners have tapped on the Grab platform to better leverage digital services to earn livelihoods and grow their businesses.

Grab employees will also attend the event, including many of those who have been with the company for over six years (internally known as a ‘Grabversaurus’). The ‘Grabversauruses’ joined the company when it was only offering ride-hailing services and operating in less than 30 cities, and have contributed to the company’s growth into a superapp that is now available in 465 cities. In recognition of the collective effort and continued partnership of the Grab community to reach this milestone, about 1,500 Grab employees, as well as representatives from Grab’s partner communities, from across Southeast Asia will be featured on the Nasdaq Tower in Times Square, New York City, after Grab is officially listed on Nasdaq.

Anthony Tan, Group CEO and Co-founder, Grab, said, “It’s important to us not to lose sight of what this was all built on. The heart and hard work of our Grabbers to serve our partners, and in turn, the dedication of our partners towards serving their customers. That’s why we chose to hold the ceremony close to home. To be here, amongst our community, sharing the moment with them as we cross the threshold into a new chapter of our journey.”

Quotes from Grab partners who will be participating in Grab’s opening bell ceremony

Roszana Binte Ali, a GrabFood delivery-partner, said, “I’m so happy to be a part of today’s celebration. Before delivering with Grab, I had tried many times to get a job and was close to giving up hope after seven years of trying. Grab was the first company that gave me the ability to earn an income and support my family, even with my disability. I am proud to be financially independent. I hope that Grab will keep bringing these earning opportunities to many more people in Southeast Asia.”

Peh Hock Chuan, a Grab driver-partner, said, “I am on the roads almost every day because I want to provide a better living for my family. I was very touched to learn that the Emerald Circle scholarships2 were given to both of my children, Pearlyn and Peter, so that they could study the courses of their choices in university. I want to keep doing my best for them so that they can focus on doing well in school and life. Thank you Grab for investing in our children, who are our future.”

Melvin Chew, Owner of Hawkers United and Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck & Kway Chap, said, “Singapore’s home-grown hawker culture is internationally recognised and is the fruit of labour of many generations of hawkers. It is not an easy trade to be in and the community struggled during this pandemic period with tightened restrictions. Going digital was one of the ways to help the hawker community stay afloat and I am glad that as a homegrown company, Grab had extended support and taught the hawkers the digital skills to reach more customers. To me, it’s clear that our region is able to grow in a meaningful and sustainable way because of Grab’s growth. I’m proud to see it go public today and hope it will continue to help small businesses across Southeast Asia.”

Mastura, Owner of Hjh Maimunah, said, “Grab has helped me to sustain my restaurant’s business during this pandemic. They understand the needs of a small F&B business like mine amidst the various Covid measures, and my aspiration to bring traditional Malay and Indonesian cuisines to more customers. With their help, we were able to continue to serve not just our returning customers, but also more people from beyond the proximity of our physical restaurants. Being awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand recently was also a huge recognition of our efforts. I’m happy to see Grab go public today – it is a major milestone and I hope that together with Grab, we can continue to grow and become better together. Working with a partner who understands us is always a joy. I look forward to more opportunities to grow with Grab.”

Jonathan Tan, Founder and Managing Director, PRISM+, said, “As a fellow entrepreneur, I know that a startup journey is never easy, and that’s why I am so happy to be here today to join Grab’s listing moment and see a fellow homegrown company succeed. This really pushes me on, and is a powerful reminder of Southeast Asia’s potential. As the first display brand born and bred in Singapore, Grab has been invaluable in helping us supercharge our sales, serving the needs of our users by providing them accessible and flexible payment solutions. We recorded a 30% increase in revenue in the last 5 months, and look forward to recording new highs with our continued partnership with Grab.”

More quotes from Grab driver-, delivery- and merchant-partners, and other business partners from across Southeast Asia are available in the Appendix.

                Diabetes in Pregnancy

Research states that gestational diabetes is high blood sugar (glucose) that develops during pregnancy and usually disappears after giving birth.  Diabetes can cause problems during pregnancy for women and their developing babies. Poor control of diabetes during pregnancy increases the chances for birth defects and other problems for the pregnancy.

Dr. Prakash M Chandrakanthan, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist – Sri Kota Specialist Medical Centre, Klang.

Proper health care before and during pregnancy can help prevent birth defects and other health problems. But the risk can be reduced if the condition is detected early and well managed.

Diabetes Mellitus and Pregnancy – Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that is first seen in a pregnant woman who did not have diabetes before she was pregnant. Gestational diabetes usually shows up in the middle of pregnancy.

                1) What is diabetes in pregnancy, also known as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)?

Diabetes that develops during pregnancy is known as gestational diabetes. It occurs because the body cannot produce enough insulin which is a hormone important in controlling blood glucose to meet its extra needs in pregnancy. This results in high blood glucose levels. Gestational diabetes usually starts in the middle or towards the end of pregnancy.

                2) What causes diabetes during pregnancy, and can it be prevented?

During pregnancy, a women’s body undergoes hormonal changes and physical changes such as weight gain. Because of these changes, the body’s cells don’t use insulin well, a condition called insulin resistance. All pregnant women have some insulin resistance during late pregnancy. Most pregnant women can produce enough insulin to overcome insulin resistance, but some cannot. These women develop gestational diabetes. As for prevention, before embarking into a pregnancy, if a woman is overweight, losing weight with regular physical activities may help in preventing gestational diabetes.

Assessment of sugar levels in a pregnant woman with pre-existing diabetes is vital.

3)What are the possible symptoms of diabetes during pregnancy?

Usually, gestational diabetes has no symptoms. If a woman does have symptoms, they may be mild, such as being thirstier than normal or having to urinate more often.

                4) What age group or category of women can be affected with this type of diabetes?

A woman is more likely to develop gestational diabetes if she is overweight with a BMI of 27kg/m2 or higher, previously have had Gestational diabetes, has a history of giving birth to a large baby, have a first-degree family member with diabetes or with the presence of sugars in the urine test done during routine follow up.

                5) How can pre -existing diabetes be managed in a pregnant woman?

Assessment of sugar levels in a pregnant woman with pre-existing diabetes is vital. Women already on medication, would either be advised to continue current medication or she may need to start on insulin injections. Low dose aspirin will also be given in addition to folic acid, calcium carbonate and vit D3 tablets. Additional blood test to look at kidney functions would need to be done. An appointment for eye assessment by an ophthalmologist will be organized to look for eye related complications secondary to pre-existing diabetes. The woman will also be given a consult with the dietician for relevant advice in maintaining a healthy diet. Her pregnancy follow ups would further be under combined care with the endocrinologist.

                6) Is it necessary for pregnant women to be screened for GDM?

All pregnant women with risk factors will need to be screened for GDM. Women at risk of developing GDM will be advised to screen early in pregnancy. Women age 25 and above with no risk factors will be advised screening between 24 to 28 weeks of gestation.

                7) What is the treatment for GDM in pregnancy, and how is it managed?

In some women, GDM will respond to healthy diet and exercise. Majority will need oral medication or insulin. Follow ups with the obstetrician will be on a regular basis. The women will be advised to monitor her blood sugar levels frequently and any abnormal results will require immediate attention by the obstetrician.

                8) What are the likely complications of diabetes during pregnancy?

Most women who develop gestational diabetes have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies but occasionally gestational diabetes can cause serious problems, especially if it is not recognized or treated. With gestational diabetes, a woman is more likely to develop a condition called preeclampsia, which is when you develop high blood pressure and too much protein in your urine during the second half of pregnancy. Uncontrolled sugar levels can also result in a woman having a stillbirth. In terms of delivery, gestational diabetes may also increase your chance of having a cesarean section as your baby may be large. In the long term, the chance of developing type 2 diabetes later in life is also increased.

9)How will gestational diabetes impact the baby’s development, and are there any birth defects?

Most of the developmental anomalies or birth defects are seen in women with pregestational diabetes in pregnancy. The anomalies include problems with the development of the heart, central nervous and skeletal system. These anomalies are usually a result of poorly controlled diabetes during preconception up to the first trimester.

                10) How prevalent is diabetes in pregnancy in Malaysia

The prevalence of diabetes in pregnancy in Malaysia is quite common ranging from 18% to 24%. The global rapid increase of gestational diabetes mellitus is alarming. Diabetes can be a common endocrine disorder in pregnancy, which is detected in weeks 24 to 28. In certain occasions, the condition can develop earlier as well. Being diagnosed with gestational diabetes can be disturbing emotionally in pregnancy, but with early screening and detection the condition can be well managed to avoid any complications during pregnancy and delivery. The prevalence of diabetes has been associated with lifestyle changes, environment and increasing urbanization. Lifestyle and eating routines play an important role in keeping your blood sugar levels within a healthy range.

                  Never Ignore Hearing Loss

Dr Jonson Ng Wei Siang, Consultant ENT / Head & Neck Surgeon – Sri Kota Specialist Medical Centre, Klang.

Hearing loss occurs when the ability to hear is impaired as compared to someone with normal hearing. Humans have the ability to detect sounds from a range of frequency from 20Hz to 20kHz while its loudness is measured in decibel (dB). A normal hearing for each frequency is defined as having a hearing threshold of 25dB or better. Some level of hearing loss is said to occur below this threshold.

Hearing loss can be mild (26- 40dB), moderate (41dB-55dB), moderately severe (56-70dB), severe (71-90dB) and profound (>91dB).  Deafness in a ear usually refers to at least a profound or total hearing loss.

Our ear is divided into 3 parts which are outer, middle and inner ear. The outer and middle ear are responsible for conducting and amplifying the sound from the environment while the inner ear is responsible for converting mechanical sound energy into electrical impulses to be sent for processing in the auditory cortex of the brain. Hearing loss can occur when there is disruption in the conduction of sound due to problems of the outer and middle ear which results in Conductive type Hearing Loss. Pathology in the inner ear will result in a Sensorineural type Hearing Loss. A combination of both conductive and sensorineural type hearing loss is referred to as Mixed Hearing Loss.

The most common cause of conductive hearing loss is impacted ear wax in the outer ear. Other common conditions that cause conductive hearing loss include:

Outer ear : otitis externa (swollen ear canal), foreign body or congenital causes such as ear canal atresia (failure of normal external ear development).

Middle ear : middle ear effusion / otitis media (fluid in the middle ear), ossicular dislocation from trauma and otosclerosis

For sensorineural hearing loss, the most common cause is due to presbyacusis (degeneration from aging). In the adult, it can also happen from damage to the inner ear as a result of prolonged exposure to noise hazard which can be work related, head injury or ototoxicity (drug induced).

A child with hearing loss may present with speech delay or other learning disability while an adult may have difficulty in communication while also speaking inappropriately loud.

Sensorineural hearing loss can also occur in a child. In such cases, it could either be congenital (from birth) or developmental (after birth). Conditions that can cause sensorineural hearing loss in a child include prematurity, certain syndromes with craniofacial anomalies, meningitis and hyperbilirubinaemia (jaundice).

Presentation of a person with hearing loss depends on the age. A child with hearing loss may present with speech delay or other learning disability while an adult may have difficulty in communication while also speaking inappropriately loud. Having hearing impairment is also shown to have an effect on an individual’s self-confidence. This would lead to social withdrawal and depression. Tinnitus (ringing in the ear) is also a common symptom in patients with hearing loss.

While newborn hearing screening is commonly done before discharge, parents need to be always vigilant if they suspect any hearing loss in their child. This is because the speech language development is most crucial in the first 2 years of a child’s life. The earlier it is recognised, the earlier intervention could be instituted, the better the chances of normal development for the child. This is especially for child who may have bilateral (both ear) deafness and may require a cochlear implant.

One should also be aware that hearing loss could also be only a part of a symptom of a more sinister underlying health diagnosis. A unilateral (one sided) ear block sensation that does not resolve over a week warrant further assessment as it could also be an early symptom of NPC (nasopharyngeal carcinoma) due to the mass in the nasopharynx obstructing the Eustachian tube opening. Sinusitis can also cause similar type hearing loss although it is usually transient while a child with persistent middle ear effusion may be caused by an underlying adenoid hypertrophy.

To diagnose hearing loss in an adult, a pure tone audiogram is commonly performed to assess the level and severity of the hearing loss. For a younger child, a BSER (Brainstem evoked response) to detect the brain wave activity to a given sound stimulus is preferred.

Management of hearing loss depends on the cause. Clearing of impacted ear wax may resolve the hearing loss. Middle ear effusion may be treated medically or if persist surgically with myringotomy and grommet insertion. Hearing loss that still persists or of sensorineural type may require the use of hearing aid if the hearing loss in indeed impairing quality of life. Types of hearing aid depends on an individual’s level of hearing loss, preference and dexterity in handling the smaller type hearing aid.

For a child found to have bilateral profound hearing loss, a cochlear implant early in a child’s speech language development would be crucial for the best outcome.

Optimal management of hearing loss also aims to restore binaural hearing. Binaural hearing (hearing with both ears) has the advantage of localising the direction of a sound. Hence, a person with single sided hearing loss may have difficulties in determining the direction of sound as well as reduced sound clarity.

Earplugs should be used if noise hazard in the work environment cannot be avoided.

Non medical treatment of hearing loss aims at prevention as well as to slow its progress. Individuals should practice good ear care in avoiding prolonged exposure to loud noises which can damage the inner ear’s hair cells. Earplugs should be used if noise hazard in the work environment cannot be avoided. Consumption of certain vitamin supplements may also help to slow the progress of nerve degeneration.

GoPay and Jago collaboration enables Indonesians to open a bank account via the Gojek app

GoPay, a digital wallet and payment solutions platform under GoTo Financial[1], and Bank Jago, an Indonesia-listed technology-based bank, today announced a new service integration that will enable the Indonesian public to open a Jago bank account directly from the Gojek application. This integration between an on-demand platform and a digital bank is the first of its kind in Indonesia, and will provide convenient access to digital banking for the millions of unbanked and underbanked consumers in the country.

GoPay, a digital wallet and payment solutions platform under GoTo Financial, and Bank Jago, an Indonesia-listed technology-based bank, announced a new service integration that will enable the Indonesian public to open a Jago bank account directly from the Gojek application.

The service is available to all consumers in Indonesia with a verified GoPay account[2] and the Gojek application, with no fees or minimum balance required to open a Jago bank account. Once their accounts are opened, GoPay Jago users will not have to pay any top-up fees when moving funds between GoPay and Jago, giving them greater benefits and convenience in managing their finances.

With only 61.7% of Indonesians having a bank account[3], GoPay and Jago’s latest integration represents a significant opportunity for both companies to bring digital banking to more people and grow financial inclusion. This is supported by a recent study by the Demographic Institute of the University of Indonesia (LDUI), which showed that 1 in 5 GoPay users currently do not have or use a bank account actively. At the same time, consumers are increasingly ready to use financial services, with 1 in 4 GoPay users interested in opening a bank account through GoPay, based on the same study.

The integration complements a feature launched earlier this year, which allows Jago users to connect their Jago pockets[4] to the Gojek app and make cashless payments for Gojek services such as transport, food, bill payments and more. Together, this means that GoPay Jago users can now enjoy a fully seamless experience in payments and financial management.

Hans Patuwo, CEO of GoPay, said: “Accelerating financial inclusion in Indonesia has been GoPay’s mission from day one, so today’s integration with Jago is a true game changer for us. It marks a new phase in our efforts to bring digital financial services to more people, as we provide convenient access to banking for millions across the country and help them kickstart their financial planning journeys. We will continue to work with Jago and other financial institutions, leveraging our respective strengths to deliver a truly unique, frictionless financial management experience for consumers from all levels of society.”

Kharim Siregar, President Director of Bank Jago, said: “Jago aims to enhance the growth of millions through life-centric digital financial services, and our collaboration with GoPay is tangible proof of this commitment. By linking our app – which makes money management simple, innovative, and collaborative – with GoPay’s wide reach, we can provide new benefits and an improved experience for consumers, enabling them to transact quickly, easily and safely in the Gojek ecosystem. With this integration between GoPay and Jago, consumers can now open a Jago account via the Gojek application as well as use their Jago pockets as a source of funds to pay for various daily necessities.”
