EXCLUSIVE: VERITAS groves PD with an environmental notion

DSAI, planting the mangrove at the VERITAS initiative.

To end 2021, on 18th December 2021, renowned architectural firm Veritas Design Group organised a mangrove reforestation and beach clean-up at Teluk Pelanduk, Port Dickson. The event, which started as early as 8:30am, was welcomed by Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim (DSAI), PKR President and Member of Parliament for Port Dickson, Tuan Khairy Maamor, Port Dickson District Officer and Tuan Zamri Esa, YDP of MPPD.

According to the NASA Earth Observatory, the team found that nearly 1300 square miles of mangrove forests or about 2 percent of global mangrove area were lost during a study that was conducted in 2016. Sixty-two percent of the lost area was due to human causes, mainly farming and aquaculture. The rest was due to natural causes, including erosion and extreme weather events.

Planting mangroves helps protect some of nature’s most endangered species. Due to the high concentration of nutrients that flow in and out of the mangrove lagoons with the tides, these forests are vital breeding and nursery grounds for a variety of animals including juvenile sharks, turtles, fish and invertebrates. Therefore, preserving this landscape is critical to protecting this circle of life.

“I am very proud of this initiative by VERITAS Design Group and the partners involved. This is a very important initiative to preserve our beaches. I believe this importance is dwindling with the older generation and hope the new generation of Malaysians will be more inclined to cultivate this importance,” said DSAI.

He added that he was very impressed with the turnout and the positive energy that was created despite a rainy Saturday morning.

The event was attended by 50 staff, executives and directors of VERITAS Design Group, five members of EcoMy and five members of Beach School as well as five members from China State Construction Engineering who worked hand in hand to make this event possible. EcoMy gave a presentation on how the mangrove reforestation would take place and how it would benefit the ecosystem before inviting DSAI to do the first planting.

The team behind the event who managed to plant 300 Mangrove trees and clean up the beach.

“We are a small group, but a very determined group. This conservation initiative has been around for many years within our connections. Of the many portfolios within VERITAS, we have held the environmental portfolio the longest. This is in line with our core value of I.D.E.A.S, which stands for Integrity, Design, Environment, Audacity and Service. The environment has always been at the core of our core values,” said Ng Yiek Seng, Principal & Director of VERITAS Design Group.

According to Ng, this is just a small step for each year in what VERITAS aims to achieve, which is to create a sustainable environmental consciousness. He believes that if everyone does the same, it will no longer be just a small group, but millions of people doing the same. He explained that in the beginning, the environment was something that VERITAS was interested in, but now, after many years, we are aware that preserving and caring for the environment should be a part of us, it should be one of the most important parts of being human.

(From left) Kent Leong, founder of Beach School, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Ng Yiek Seng, Principal & Director of VERITAS Design Group in discussion about planting the first mangrove tree.

“If we are just alone, we cannot change the world. We hope that everyone will emulate these steps. We all need to create that awareness, that clarity, that ability to look at what’s around us and make a difference. That’s why we owe the success of today’s initiative to VERITAS ‘s team as well as it’s collaboration with NGO EcoMy and Beach School, which targets younger children,” Ng added.

The event ended after 300 mangrove trees were replanted and the beach was completely cleaned up at 12 noon.

YB Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias impressed with new homes being given out to 1520 families as developer gives back to the community.

Desa Aman Avenue Sdn Bhd and Desa Aman Hill Residence Sdn Bhd has officially announced their initiation to change the lifestyle of the living standards of the current residents of Rajawali flats and the Desa Aman Flats.

Subscribe to our Telegram channel to get a daily dose of business and lifestyle news from NHA – News Hub Asia!

In this initiative, Desa Aman Avenue Sdn Bhd will redevelop 3 blocks of Flats in Taman Desa Aman which ranges from 300 units to 1,449 units condominium, while Desa Aman Hill Residence Sdn Bhd will redevelop 1 block of Rajawali Flats ranging from 80 units to 693 condominium units, benefiting 1520 families.

All existing owners of the current broken down flats will acquire one new condominium unit (House Replacement) with this “Key-to-key Home Swap Redevelopment Concept” without involving any costs to the owner. These new condominium units that will be given to these residents will be 900 sq ft with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 1 car parking bay, with luxurious condominium facilities such as recreation spaces, sports venues, swimming pools, community halls and others. Owners also don’t have to move out of their respective flats during the construction of the condominium, as the swap will only take place after the condominiums are fully erected.

YB Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias, Timbalan Menteri Wilayah Persekutuan officiated the event this morning as he took a tour of the current living situations of the residents at the flats together with YB Datuk Seri Haji Mahadi Bin Che Ngah (Datuk Bandar Kuala Lumpur), YB Datuk Mahadi Bin Abdul Shukor, (Chairman of Desa Aman Avenue Sdn Bhd), Dato’ Tony Chin Hon Fah, (Managing Director of Desa Aman Avenue Sdn Bhd), Chin Ke Liang, (Project Director of Aman Avenue Sdn Bhd) as well as Saravanan A/L Sammy Nathan, (Chairman of Desa Aman JMB).

“I am very proud of Dato’ Tony for this excellent initiative to redevelop these 380 low-cost flat units at Taman Desa Aman. This is a positive step to ensuring the comfort of our Kuala Lumpur community without these flat owners having to fork out any payments. Redevelopment of units that are 40 years and above need to be carried out on a per stage basis for the comfort and safety of its residents”, said YB Alias.

He added to say that units that were built 40 years ago at 500sq ft can no longer be deemed comfortable in today’s climate. It needs to follow the current living standards set by the Government’s ‘Keluarga Malaysia’ under the prevue of YAP Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaacob, the current Prime Minister of Malaysia, which states that units need to be developed with at least 800sq ft of space.

“The beauty of this Key-to-key Home Swap Redevelopment Concept is that residents of the current low-cost flats will only need to move out of their current houses upon 100 percent completion of the new development. Residents will not need to be worried about breaking down the current flats or being housed in a transit home until completion of the condominiums. The developer will complete the development and will host a key handing over ceremony before residents need to move out of their flats”, he added.

YB Datuk Alias also took the opportunity to reach out to other developers and urged them to carry out such responsibilities to ensure the betterment of the community because we go through changes in phases from time to time and we can no longer face catastrophe as we have in recent times, which saw losses of life as well as possessions from many people. These loses can be contributed to the wear and tear of certain developments that can no longer stand the test of time. Due to this, we believe that all living premises, especially low-cost flats that house the B40 group needs to be looked at and measures need to be taken to ensure their safety and betterment.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thanks YB Datuk Bandar for his contribution and involvement in this project becoming a success. On behalf of the government, we would like to state that we believe that we all live in one Malaysian Community hence we need to care and love one another.

“As the JMB chairman of this 40-year-old development, we have been faced with many challenges with regards to strata titles. Without redevelopment, there is definitely no solution for this issue, because the previous developer has filed for bankruptcy. The issue here is that it is impossible for any resident to sell their units as banks will not approve loans due to this title issue. With this redevelopment offered by Dato’ Tony, all residents will be awarded with individual strata titles and this automatically solves this current issue. Furthermore, all residents will finally be able to live is comfort and in more space as the given units are much bigger and in better quality that it is now”, said Nathan.

“This event was supposed to take place on the 20th of December, but due to the unfortunate floods, it was postponed to today. I believe that it is better late than never. This event was necessary to help the current residents of these worn-out flats. The living conditions are horrible and they deserve a better lifestyle. I do hope that other places in Cheras, such as Shamelin could also see such initiatives taking place soon”, said Raymond Ng Tack Yee, Chairman of Sub Zon 5 Parlimen Cheras.

According to Dato’ Tony, the reason for this redevelopment is none other than to ensure a better lifestyle for the current low-cost flats residents. After 40 years and a lifetime of suffering, it’s about time they be honoured with some comfort, facilities, security and space to move around. Each unit will also come with a carparking bay so that residents no longer need to scramble for parking.

“We are doing our part to make living more comfortable for the residents of Malaysia and do hope that others follow suit too”, said Dato’ Tony.

The event ended at 12:30pm with a luncheon hosted by the developer and many warm meals were give out to all residents and guests who attended the function.

TSAM, which was recently launched in October this year, comprises four major players in Malaysia’s tourism, business events and the airline industry, namely the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS), Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) and airlines under the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) consisting of Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and MASwings.

With tourism activities gradually picking up, the joint partnership is seen as a timely move by Penang to lead efforts in tourism and economic recovery, where safety and hygiene aspects are prioritised across the industry including for hotels, food establishments, convention centres, tours, and transportation.

Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Yeoh Soon Hin, said: “As the Penang State EXCO for Tourism & Creative Economy, spearheading necessary efforts to ensure everyone’s safety is also essential to me. We have and will continue to work hard to ensure that Penang can safely receive tourists to revive the economy.”

He noted that the double assurance of Penang’s industry-specific safety accreditation programme — the first in Malaysia — and TSAM’s travel solution certified by Bureau Veritas Certification Malaysia, raised the benchmark for travel safety. “This provides solid assurance to travellers that the Penang State Government puts travel safety top-most on its agenda and welcomes tourists to its shores for peace-of-mind holidays,” he said.

He added: “On top of that, Penang Responsible Tourism campaign was also unveiled in July last year to remind all parties of their respective roles while partaking in travel activities. Allow me to note that this campaign is also updated from time to time, in accordance with the guidelines outlined by the National Security Council, to better suit the nation’s pandemic situation.”

Pointing out that TSAM would provide a competitive edge for those in the tourism industry, YBhg Datuk Tan Kok Liang, President of MATTA, shared: “TSAM will play a key role in promoting Malaysia as a travel-safe destination more so since travel safety and hygiene has become one of the top concerns for travellers worldwide today. TSAM will set the bar in first-to-last-mile travel standards, and accredited Malaysian tourism stakeholders will definitely have a keener competitive edge when it comes to competing for market-share in various key source markets.”

YBhg Dato’ N. Subramaniam, President of MAH, was pleased that the hygiene practice established by the hoteliers was gaining traction. He said: Malaysian Association of Hotels first launched the Clean & Safe Malaysia hygiene and safety certification for hotels back in July 2020, and today it has become the benchmark of hotel safety standards as well as a key component in TSAM. The endorsement by the Penang State Government is a significant step forward to further boost travellers’ confidence for the impending tourism recovery.”

Meanwhile, MACEOS President, Mr. Francis Teo, felt that industry-wide implementation of consistent safety standards was necessary to strengthen Malaysia’s tourism industry. He called upon all tourism industry players to subscribe to TSAM, saying: “TSAM looks forward to seeing a wider acceptance and implementation of its certification programme among the island’s tourism industry players. This is especially urgent in light of the launch of new flights into Penang from Kota Kinabalu and Kuching from 1 December 2021.”

Group Chief Executive Officer of MAG, Captain Izham Ismail, said that the collaboration was in line with its corporate mission of providing a safe travel experience. He said: “We are excited to collaborate with our counterparts in Penang as this continues to be a key domestic market for us – evident with the recent launch of Penang as our new hub for direct flights from the state to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. As the national carrier, we will continue to be the flag bearer in providing a seamless, safe and hygienic travel experience for business and leisure travellers, supported by our sister airlines Firefly and MASwings. This is underpinned by our 7-star rating for COVID-19 health and safety measures by Airlines Ratings, consisting of stringent safety initiatives and procedures so our passengers can travel with peace of mind.”

He added: “Safety and security are an integral part of MAG’s DNA and way of doing business. We remain steadfast in our commitment to ensure safety in all aspects of our operations and the stakeholders in our journey. As a responsible organisation, we recently completed a detailed audit for our subsidiaries with the Bureau Veritas Certification Malaysia to ensure that we not only meet the standards of health within the organisation but also certify our efforts in keeping our customers safe. This will further strengthen our commitment to ensuring safer and seamless travel, so that leisure and business travellers can continue to #FlyConfidently with us.”

At the same event, MAG launched its MHFlySafe campaign and logo that further reinforced its commitment of putting safety and hygiene as the anchor across all end-to-end consumer touchpoints – beginning from the check-in counters, lounges, onboard its flights and through to point of arrival.

With year-end travel to Penang expected to rise due to pent-up demand and attractive holiday offerings, tourism industry players can instil confidence in the travelling public by subscribing to the TSAM certification programme endorsed by PETACE.
