Vodafone Study: 75 Percent Of Global Companies Leverage Flexible Working Policies

53 percent of Singapore companies reported increased profits after implementing flexible working

      Vodafone

SINGAPORE, June 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Vodafone revealed results of its Flexible: friend or foe? study which found 75 percent of companies worldwide have introduced flexible working policies to enable employees to vary their hours and use the latest technologies to work remotely. The survey of 8,000 business professionals across three continents also revealed that 53 percent of companies inSingapore who have introduced flexible working have seen increased profits since its implementation.

The Flexible: friend or foe? study drew on responses from small and medium-sized businesses, public sector organizations and multinational corporations (MNCs) in 10 countries. Respondents stated — to a striking extent — that they believed performance had been enhanced as a result of flexible working:

      • 61 percent of respondents globally said their company’s profits increased;
      • 83 percent reported an improvement in productivity; and
      • 58 percent believed that flexible working policies had a positive impact on their organization’s reputation.

The rapid adoption of high-speed mobile data services, fixed-line broadband and cloud services is playing an integral role in this workplace revolution: 61 percent of respondents now use their home broadband service to access work applications and 24 percent use a mobile data connection via their smartphone, tablet or laptop with broadband dongle.

More than three-quarters of Singapore companies offer flexible working, though barriers still exist

76 percent of responding organizations in Singapore stated they have implemented flexible working policies, on par with the global average of 75 percent. Benefits realized include:

      • 53 percent of Singapore companies saw increased profits after implementing flexible working.
      • 77 percent of Singapore companies who have implemented flexible working have seen an increase in employee productivity.
      • Teamwork has improved in 54 percent of Singapore organizations utilizing flexible working.
      • 54 percent of Singapore workers leverage flexible working to improve work/life balance.
      • Staff morale has increased in 75 percent of these organizations.

Vodafone’s survey also explored why 20 percent of respondents globally said their organization had not yet implemented a flexible working policy. Specifically in Singapore:

      • 27 percent of Singapore companies who have not implemented flexible working have not done so due to fears that employee teamwork will decline.
      • 57 percent of Singapore employees feel they do not have a usable flexible policy in place at their job.
      • 38 percent of Singapore employees do not currently use enterprise social networking — a tool that would play a major role in flexible working.

Vodafone Global Enterprise Asia Pacific President Ben Elms said: “Vodafone’s research reveals a profound and rapid shift in the modern workplace. Singapore employers are telling us that flexible working boosts profits while their employees tell us they’re more productive. Central to all of this are the new technologies that are reshaping every sector, from high-speed mobile data networks and fixed-line broadband to the latest collaborative cloud services. We truly are in an era when work is what you do, not where you go.”

      Notes to editors

        Sustainable Brands inaugural Sydney conference

The environmental and social impact of brands are being increasingly scrutinised by stakeholders, employees and most importantly consumers, and the demand for new products, services and business models that deliver both purpose and profit, is soaring.

The world has changed and transparency is paramount. Innovative brand leaders with their focus on positive, sustainable outcomes will thrive, whilst those who fail to deliver will dive.

That’s the message underpinning Sustainable Brands, a global learning, collaboration and commerce community of forward thinking business and brand strategists, marketing innovators and sustainability professionals, convening in Sydney, Australia for the first time. The SB16 Sydney conference offers the opportunity for business leaders to join 300+ professionals over three days of plenaries, workshops and networking events, 27 – 29 June 2016 at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth.

Dr Sally Uren, CEO, Forum for the Future, works with both individual pioneering businesses including Unilever and Kimberly Clark and global collaborations designed to address system-wide challenges. Dr Uren is coming to Australia for the first time in a professional capacity to headline SB16 Sydney. Based in the UK and overseeing offices in the US, Singapore and India, Dr Uren leads a number of global projects including Net Positive (an initiative challenging businesses to put back more into society, environment and the global economy than they take out), Cotton 2040 (a project aiming to mainstream sustainable cotton) and Tea 2030 (a project to deliver a sustainable tea value chain).

“The role of business in delivering solutions to society’s current set of significant and complex sustainability challenges has never before attracted so much attention. And the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris agreement on climate change emissions give us a shared direction that’s never been clearer. Unleashing the power of business to act as agents of transformative change requires, well, transformation, and SB16 Sydney will provide a platform to discuss the challenges, collaborate, and act to ensure a more sustainable future.

“It’s critical to transform the key systems we rely on and to do that everyone in the value chain must be involved, from the producers and manufacturers right through to the end-user, all working together towards a common aim.

“At SB16 Sydney, I will highlight key opportunities such as system innovation, the circular economy, pre-competitive collaboration and closing the circle between government, business and the consumer/community. I encourage professionals from all industries including marketing, design, construction, architecture, finance, medicine, communication, technology and so many more to join us is shaping a more sustainable future,” said Dr Uren.

SB16 Sydney will lead an agenda designed to educate, inspire and motivate cross-sector industries on how to build, integrate and leverage sustainability into their brands. Through an innovative program of collaboration and information, the event will provide the tools and partnerships to drive business success and positive impact.

Keynote presentations by global thought leaders include Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO of TerraCycle discussing how businesses can realign their concept of waste and how it can become a brand ROI concept. Simon Mainwaring, Founder and CEO of We First will share his experience in social media helping companies tell the story of the good they do in ways that build reputation, profits and social impact. Bern van Son, CEO of MUD Jeans will discuss the paradox of tackling the three major issues in fashion of pollution, slavery and recycling whilst still making fashionable jeans.

Sustainable Brands events were founded on the belief that unleashing the best of human ingenuity and innovation can change the shape of business, and with it, the world. Asia Plantation Capital Welcomes Interns From Local Universities to its Johor Distillery

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, May 30, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Asia Plantation Capital will be providing industrial training for undergraduate students from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) starting in June 2016.

          unnamed

Operations at Asia Plantation Capital’s purpose-built agarwood distillation and research centre has been in full swing for the past year, and is now ready to open its doors to interns from local universities. Asia Plantation Capital Berhad has recently confirmed collaborations with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) to be a part of these universities’ internship or industrial training programmes.

To commence proceedings, each university is sending one student to the Asia Plantation Capital Johor facility for a period of three months, to fulfil his or her industrial training requirements. The placement will begin in June of this year.

With UPM, Asia Plantation Capital joins forces with the University’s Faculty of Forestry, to provide industrial training for undergraduate students under the Bachelor of Wood Science and Technology programme. The first intern from this faculty will be placed in the Asia Plantation Capital’s research and development (R&D) department at the Johor distillery and research centre. Within this department, the intern will be assisting in production processes, and will participate in the developmental research that has been designed to increase oil-producing resins from agarwood.

Asia Plantation Capital’s partnership with IIUM is specifically with the University’s Kulliyyah (Faculty) of Engineering. With this collaboration, Asia Plantation Capital is opening its Johor facility to provide industrial training for undergraduates from the Biochemical-Biotechnology Engineering programme, who are required to participate in the Engineering Industrial Training (EIT) programme in order to complete their Bachelor’s degree. The first intern from this programme will be assisting in matters relating to inoculation and DNA barcoding of agarwood.

Steve Watts , Asia Plantation Capital’s Chief Executive Officer, Asia Pacific , said, “The objective of industrial training in a university’s undergraduate programme is to allow students to gain first-hand experience of the actual working environment in an organisation within an industry. This is always difficult to achieve within the confines of a university’s premises or in a purely academic setting. Our distillery and research centre in Johor will be a perfect place for these students, not only to experience working life and to learn how, when and where to apply their skills and knowledge, but also to expose them to the environment of an international company in a purpose-built facility. We hope and expect that these students will learn and grow within the three months of their internship with us,” he concluded, “and we encourage more students from UPM and IIUM to join us, see what we’re doing, and benefit from a relationship with us during the course of their industrial training.”

Asia Plantation Capital’s state-of-the-art agarwood distillation and research centre is located in the Masai Industrial Park, Johor, Malaysia , and has been fully operational since early last year. To mark its first anniversary of operations, Asia Plantation Capital will be celebrating with an official opening ceremony of the facility, which will be launched by YB Datuk Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) on the 2nd of June 2016 .

          About Asia Plantation Capital

Asia Plantation Capital Berhad in Malaysia is currently investing heavily in the Malaysian plantation sector, developing new plantations and factories for the production of agarwood (gaharu) and other associated products for international export markets. Future Looking Bright For US$60 Billion Global Duty Free Retail Sector

According to new data from the leading global duty free and travel retail body Tax Free World Association, sales in 2015 in this significant retail business stood at a substantial US$62.1 billion, leaving the sector’s claim to be ‘the sixth continent’ of retail firmly intact.

Growth remains impressive in many parts of the sector, and the long-term prospects for the business are good, according to the association, which specialises in hosting duty free industry exhibitions and conferences as well as providing in-depth market research.

The data shows that the largest category remains fragrances and cosmetics, which accounts for US$19.5 billion of sales. Just over US$10 billion is spent on wines and spirits, while the third largest category is fashion and accessories, valued at just under US$9 billion. Other important product categories include tobacco (US$7.8 billion), watches, jewellery and fine writing (US$5.5 billion) and confectionery and fine food (US$4.8 billion).

Well over a third (US$25.2 billion) of the global duty free business is in Asia, while the next largest region in sales terms is Europe, accounting for just under US$19 billion.

The lion’s share of the business was at airports, where US$35.2 billion of sales were achieved, with sales of over two billion on airlines (US$2.6 billion) and ferries (US$2.2 billion). However, US$22.1 billion of sales were recorded at what TFWA terms ‘other’ duty free retail. This includes downtown duty free (a burgeoning phenomenon that is transforming duty free retail in Asia), border shops and cruise outlets.

Sales in Asia Pacific were up by 2.6%, bucking the trend in many parts of the region. Two markets also increased substantially in Asia; sales of fragrances and cosmetic were up by a very healthy 18.3% to US$9.5 billion, while tobacco sales rose by 8.5% to US$2.7 billion.

However, global sales in this major retail business have fallen in the past year. TFWA said volatility in currency exchange rates and the global economy were negative factors that have impacted the business. The organisation also cited geo-political tensions and terrorism that had a profound impact on passengers’ ability and willingness to travel via airports as a curb on growth. In spite of this, there is no shortage of reasons for optimism when it comes to the long-term vision for the business. ‘We have faced similar challenges many times before,” said TFWA president Erik Juul-Mortensen, “and every time, the sector has bounced back.”

In Asia, for example, the growth in air travel far outstrips the growth in GDP and in 2015, 1.6 billion people in Asia travelled by air. “That’s a huge potential customer base for us,’ continued Juul-Mortensen. “It’s a similar picture elsewhere, and all the major international authorities, including the World Tourism Organisation, are similarly upbeat about the future of international air travel. This is a great business to be in.”

The data was compiled by long-established and respected specialist duty free and travel retail research company Generation Research.

              World No Tobacco Day

“On this World No Tobacco Day – I challenge all young people to say no to smoking.  I appeal to you all to protect our youth from tobacco’s harm and break the tobacco marketing net.”

~ Dr. Jean-Marc Olivé, WHO Representative in Vietnam ~

              c0136175ae4166bd093250e1017d6f8e

Tobacco is a leafy plant grown on our Earth. In 2007, four countries that are China, Brazil, India, and the United States produced two-thirds of the World’s tobacco. Tobacco is an addictive substance because it contains the chemical nicotine and like heroin or cocaine, nicotine changes the way our brains work and causes us to crave more of it. This addiction to nicotine is what makes smoking harmful especially to young people.

World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The World Health Organisation and partners mark this day by highlighting the health risks associated with Tobacco use and advocating for the effective policies to reduce Tobacco consumption.

This year, the World Health Organisation and the Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control are calling different countries to get ready for plain or standardized packaging of tobacco products. This is meant to reduce the attractiveness of the tobacco products, restricts the use of tobacco packaging as a form of tobacco advertising and promotion.

A few goals for this World No Tobacco Day 2016 campaign according to WHO is that the day aims to facilitate policy development by member states and the globalisation of plain packaging by providing informative, compelling and persuasive information as well as to highlight the role of plain packaging as part of the comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach to tobacco control.

Since smoking is the single biggest preventable cause of death, we, at the World Assembly of Youth (WAY), believe in empowering youth leaders and youth organisations in order to collaborate together to achieve a generation free of drugs-abuse. In fact, in one area of our Fourth Millennium Plan of Action, we encourage all of our members to strengthen the capacity of their countries for early warning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks, including danger in abusing addictive substances.

              Happy World No Tobacco Day!

The Ministry of Science and Technology, NSTDA, and Autodesk Join Hands to Advance Digital Manufacturing in Thailand

Industry-wide adoption of Autodesk design and collaboration software to boost manufacturing competitiveness and benefit up to 100,000 engineering professionals

BANGKOK, May 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ – The National Science and Technology Development Agency(NSTDA), the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Autodesk today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to help advance Thailand’s manufacturing competitiveness through industry-wide adoption of leading edge 3D technologies and digital manufacturing capabilities.

” Thailand will need to adapt in this 21 st century world from a Thailand 3.0 model to a ‘ Thailand 4.0 model’, in order to advance Thailand further into a developed country. This is to support Thailand in changing from a country with ‘middle income’ to ‘high income’, moving the economy from one that operates on ‘performance’ to one that progresses through ‘innovation’. One of the initiatives and mechanisms for moving into an economy of Thailand 4.0 is through the use of technology in Industry 4.0, which will adopt the greater use of digital technologies in manufacturing. A special element of this is the ability to directly connect the needs of consumers to the manufacturing process, which implies that larger factories would not necessarily be a competitive edge or limitation for operators any longer. This phenomenon will indeed have an immense impact on the economy’s infrastructure,” said Dr. Pichet Durongkaveroj , Minister of Science and Technology.

“Through the cooperation of world leading companies like Autodesk with the NSTDA, this will support local SMEs in using digital technologies in their design and manufacturing processes, as well as elevating the capabilities of Thai talent to be ready for the manufacturing industry of the future. Moreover, this leads to the creation of value in industries, which coincides with the policy objectives of the government, such as in the biotechnology industry, renewable energy, engineering and design industries related to enhancing the quality of life, and the creative economy industry, which will strengthen the country further,” added Dr. Pichet Durongkaveroj , Minister of Science and Technology.

NSTDA, under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Autodesk will aim to jointly establish a ‘Digital Manufacturing Platform’ in support of the National Digital Economy Master Plan. This will provide up to 100,000 engineers and vocational professionals from companies of all sizes with subscription based access to Autodesk’s 3D design, manufacturing, simulation, and collaboration tools, services and training for three years.

“Manufacturing is critical to our economy. Digital manufacturing technologies and talent development will propel Thailand forward in a highly competitive market. The Digital Manufacturing Platform powered by Autodesk technologies will help local players increase the pace of innovation, and promote connectivity and collaboration in alignment to the government’s Digital Economy goals,” said Dr. Thaweesak Koanantakool , President, The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA).

Two key technologies within the Digital Manufacturing Platform are Autodesk’s Fusion 360 and A360 Team . Fusion 360 brings together computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering (CAD, CAM and CAE). Available for Mac, PC or mobile, Fusion 360 is an integrated, connected, and accessible tool built for the new ways products are being designed and made. It also provides the context to understand all aspects of a project and collaborate with everyone participating through the use of A360. A360 modernizes the way people work together and captures all project information and activity, giving teams a central place to collaborate.

“Technologies like the Internet of Things, augmented and virtual reality, robotics and additive manufacturing are disrupting the industry.  The Digital Manufacturing Platform gives local talent and companies the tools to transform every link in the manufacturing value chain, and the opportunity forThailand to lead in the Future of Making Things,” said Mr. Rama Tiwari, Regional director of sales, Autodesk ASEAN.

The Digital Manufacturing Platform is one of several initiatives in the on-going collaboration between NSTDA and Autodesk to support Thailand’s Digital Economy.
