    International Day of Friendship

“Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It’s not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.”

    ~ Muhammad Ali~

    friendship-clipart-Friendship-Clip-Art-6

There are many valuable things in life but friendship is one of the most important relationships one can have. The ability to make and keep good friends is important throughout life, and much of that ability develops as early as childhood. In our daily lives, friends provide a basic source of happiness, as well as a source of support in difficult and challenging times. However, close friendships do not happen by accident, there are certain desires that assist in development of meaningful and lasting friendships.

The International Day of Friendship promotes the role that each and every one of us plays in upholding peace and harmony in many cultures around the world. This day is observed annually on 30th of July and is based on the recognition of friendship not only in the general sense but also both its relevance and importance. It is also a reminder filled with valuable sentiments in the lives of human beings.

The International Day of Friendship has been celebrated in several South American countries for many years, particularly in Paraguay, where the first World Friendship Day was proposed back in 1958. In 2011, the United Nations proclaimed the International Day of Friendship to inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities from different backgrounds amongst people, countries, and regions. The Day is also intended to support the goals and objectives of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace and the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010).

The World Assembly of Youth (WAY), encourage all stakeholders, youth inclusive, to organise activities that shall promote harmony, mutual understanding and reconciliation among all. It is through such activities that young people and youth leaders from different cultures, backgrounds and occupations would cherish and cultivate a common interest in accomplishing the wellbeing of all, worldwide. During their activities, new friendships are born, as young people and relevant stakeholders work together to tackle different youth issues and advocate their rights. Therefore, in this day, they urge young people to engender many sparks of beautiful friendships and promote understanding and respect for diversity among each other.

Let us remember the ties that bind us together, regardless of our race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or borders. To live life without the experience of friendship is life without living. Let us cultivate solidarity and pursue true and lasting friendship.

    Happy International Day of Friendship!

        Nelson Mandela International Day

“When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity.” ~ Nelson Mandela~

        nelson-mandela-day

Mandela was and will always remain a true depiction of self-sacrifice and a blessing to human kind. His legacy lives on from age group to age group. He was a symbol of unlimited unity that has no race and shares one common good, a human kind.

Acknowledging on his great efforts, every year on his birthday, United Nations joins a call with the Nelson Mandela Foundation to devote 67 minutes of time to helping others as a way of honouring his good deeds throughout the world and encouraging individuals, communities, governments and non-profit organisations to take one small step towards the larger leap of making a positive imprint.

Nelson Mandela International Day was inspired by Nelson Mandela’s call, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that ‘it is in your hands now’. It is more than a celebration of Nelson’s life and legacy; it is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better. In fact, it is a reminder for all that every person in the world can make a difference, no matter how big or small their contribution.

As the world reflects on Nelson Mandela’s legacy, we at the World Assembly of Youth (WAY), give tribute for his life, his leadership, his devotion to humanity and humanitarian causes. We believe that Nelson Mandela Day is not only celebrating Nelson Mandela’s life, but it is also a global call to action for people to recognise their ability and responsibility to have a positive effect on others around them.

We seek to instigate and support young people to embrace the values that Mandela shared which include democracy, freedom, equality, diversity, reconciliation, and respect. We believe that as the largest portion of the population, any changes starts from young people will certainly bring productive result to the society and to the world.

Let us give the little of our time to make a change that is close to your heart by giving a little of your time to make a difference for the betterment of someone else’s life. We can start today amongst our surroundings from the smallest thing.

World Youth Skills Day “Skills Development to Improve Youth Employment”

There are more youth on the planet than ever before. These young people are poised with all of the potential and energy to be our next generation of leaders, workers and parents.

There are 1.8 billion young people around the world, making up a quarter of the global population. They are the workforce of the future, yet 58 million of them are not even able to attend primary school. How can young people help themselves, both practically and professionally? How can developing countries reduce youth unemployment and realise their full potential? How could youth leaders make a difference?

World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) was established by the United Nations in 2014 to raise greater awareness of the importance of technical and vocational education for young people who need to develop relevant and marketable skills. July 15 is the World Youth Skills Day, observed yearly. The theme for this year is “Skills Development to Improve Youth Employment”. Understanding what works to support young people in today’s and tomorrow’s labour market through training and skills development, will be the main key to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Skills development is a primary means of enabling young people to make a smooth transition to work. We need to develop the 21st century skills, which are: critical thinking, problem solving creativity, collaboration and digital literacy through ultimate learning re-skilling and up-skilling programmes.

A high level of youth unemployment and underemployment is an acute problem. Majority of young people, who cannot be employed, live in the developing countries. Recognition of this problem and implementation of different programmes is aimed at enhancement of youth’s ability to make informed life and work choices. More than 61 million jobs have been lost since 2008, resulting in more than 200 million people unemployed word wide. The youth unemployment rate is nearly 3 times higher than the rest of the population that is why is vital to raise awareness about the importance of investing in the development of youth skills.

WYSD is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which proposed two goals on education and skills for employment: Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, and Goal 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

The World Assembly of Youth (WAY) seeks to generate greater awareness of and discussion on the importance of technical, vocational education, and training and the development of other skills relevant to both local and global economies. Our vocation is to contribute in reducing unemployment and underemployment among the youth across the globe. It shall highlight youth skills development to draw attention to the critical need for marketable skills.

To WAY, this day serves as an opportunity to highlight the importance of youth skills development. We recognize and support projects and initiatives that seek to equip young people with the right tools and resources that will further develop their capacity. This shall enable young people to obtain decent work in a sustainable low carbon world and help them address global challenges in particular, poverty eradication. We urge NGOs and other relevant stakeholders to identify areas of skilling and vocational training that need improvement and encourage the unemployed youth to adopt their own entrepreneurship for self-sufficiency.

You can join the celebration for the first-ever World Youth Skills Day by sharing your experiences and ideas using the hash tag #WYSD or #WYSD2016 on social media.

          Happy World Youth Skills Day!

The Role of Acacia Gum in the Food Industry Today

Acacia Gum, a natural, multipurpose additive, is meeting consumers expectations towards natural and sustainable food products

Various food crises have influenced public opinion around the world in recent years, and created acute awareness among consumers. Consumers are increasingly attentive to their diet, the quality of food products and the effect of what they eat on their health. Several studies show that consumer fears trigger food trends, like for example the increase in vegetarian diets, the search for naturalness and organic food, or the reject of GMOs and artificial flavorings… The importance of product quality and a healthy diet is reflected in consumer choices.

As consumers become more worried, they are also better informing and expressing themselves today, using the technological tools of our time to send alerts and build alliances. Shoppers take their role very seriously and wish to be heard. Their behaviors are constantly shaping marketing messages, and giant companies in the food industry are following the trends and reformulating their products to meet consumers’ expectations.

Among consumers’ concerns, the additives are often stigmatized, and the term “additives” can arouse fears. The consumption trend is moving toward the desire to minimize products with too many additives, and limit products that are unhealthy if consumed in excess or harmful to the environment.

Yet it is important to distinguish between additives, based on their source and their impact on health. Some additives are completely natural, absolutely safe for the body and eco-friendly. Such is the case for Acacia Gum, a completely safe additive that has many functional properties.

Also known as E414, Acacia gum is a natural exudation extracted after an incision is made in an acacia tree, making its harvest completely natural and sustainable. Acacia Gum has been used by men for millennia, and is today found in small doses in a large number of everyday products, including wines, candies, cosmetics, soft drinks, flavorings. It can be used as a coating agent for confectioneries, an emulsifier and stabilizing agent in drinks, or a fiber in dietetic products. Gum Acacia’s status of dietary fiber means it also has valuable properties, like an excellent digestive tolerance, and scientifically proven prebiotic effects.

A natural, multipurpose additive, Gum Acacia meets consumers’ expectations towards natural and sustainable food products.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, July 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — The U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC)and its long-term partner Honeywell (NYSE: HON) hosted more than 200 teachers from 25 countries and 36 U.S. states and territories at the Honeywell Educators at Space Academy (HESA) , over two consecutive weeks in June, 2016. International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

The vulnerability of young people to drug abuse has in recent years become a major concern. The consequences of widespread drug abuse and trafficking, particularly for young men and women, are all too apparent. Violence, particularly street violence, often results from drug abuse and illicit drug networks.

                  worlddrugday-390x260

Today, there is widespread recognition among Member States and United Nations entities that drug abuse, together with organised crime, jeopardise the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. It is increasingly clear that drug control must become an essential element of our joint efforts to achieve peace, security and sustainable development. At the same time, we must reinforce our commitment to shared responsibility and the basic principles of health and human rights.

Celebrated annually and worldwide on the 26th June, International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has an aim in bringing awareness and emphasising on the hazards of drug addiction and illegal trafficking. This day aspires to highlight drug abuse as a major deterrent to humanity and socio-economic growth as well as melanoma to the well-being of the youth which in overall distort the sustainable development of a nation. This day serves as a reminder of the goals agreed to by Member States of creating an international society free of drug abuse.

We, at the World Assembly of Youth (WAY), work on empowering youth leaders and youth organisations especially for that matter related to awareness and collaboration in achieving a generation free of drug abuse. Realising that, we have published a book in 2009‘Youth & Drugs Abuse’ (http://www.way.org.my/books.html) with the purpose of educating young people on the danger of drug abuse. In 2008, we also organised the 8th Melaka International Youth Dialogue (MIYD) with a theme ‘Towards a Drug Free Generation’ where youth and youth leaders convened and came up with ideas or rather suggestions (declaration) on how to address the issue of drug abuse (http://www.way.org.my/program-outcome/item/miyd-declaration-2008).

The prolonging WAY’s commitment also reflects on our recent co-organised event, the IFNGO Youth Healthy Lifestyle Workshop, which took place on November 2015. The Resolution of this fruitful event is available at the following link: http://ifngo.pemadam.org.my/files/pdf/p6/YOUTH_RESOLUTION_IFNGO_HEALTHY_LIFESTYLE_WORKSHOP_PP.pdf. We shall continue carrying out our mission and with joint effort, we could together achieve a generation free of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Happy International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking!
