    International Migrants Day

Migration has been a courageous expression of the individual’s effort to overcome adversity and to live a better life. Today, globalisation, together with advances in communications and transportation, has greatly increased the number of people who have the desire and the capacity to move to other places.

This new era has created challenges and opportunities for societies throughout the world. It also has served to underscore the clear linkage between migration and development, as well as the opportunities it provides for co-development, that is, the concerted improvement of economic and social conditions at both origin and destination.

International Migrants Day is celebrated yearly on the 18th of December. International Migrants Day is an international day observed for taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world. On December 18, 1990, the General Assembly adopted the international convention on the protection of the rights of migrant workers and members of their families.

Migration is firmly on the global agenda. In fact, the first United Nations side event on migration took place last year. As for national agenda, the summit in Malta brought African and European leaders together to discuss pertinent issues on migration. Besides, Canada’s new government has sounded a Clarion call, taking 25,000 thousand refugees in a rapid, regulated, and welcoming mass intake. In Asia, governments have gathered to seek a regional solution to the migration crisis in the Andaman Sea.

World Assembly of Youth (WAY) tackled a theme ‘Youth Migration: A Step from Haven’ in the 13th Melaka International Youth Dialogue. This theme realised to fulfil the principal opinions of young people and to form, educate, increase awareness on the adversities and prerogatives of youth migration in the different levels of society that young people represented. We seek to help all nations whenever it is possible to fulfil their responsibility to assist and protect mobile populations because migrants are more likely to be subject to hardship, human rights violations and discrimination in crisis situations.

Let’s honor International Migrants Day with a call to action to lift up and respect human rights of all migrants, and to commit to challenge and end all forms of racism and Xenophobia.

We would like to wish you all a Happy International Migrants Day!

Australia’s Forgotten Army In Asia Key To Our Success

Despite having a growing expatriate community in Asia, Australia is not doing enough to engage and utilise this talent and is poorly positioned to do so in future, according to a new PwC report.

        pwc

According to the CEO of PwC Consulting, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand Derek Kidley, the findings of the report show the opportunity for success in Asia continues to pass us by.

“We have hundreds of thousands of expatriate Australians amounting to a forgotten army – overlooked by policymakers in Australia and passed over by business when they choose to return,” Derek Kidley said while launching the report: Our diaspora’s got talent: Australia’s advantage in Asia to the Australian Business Asia regional conference.

“Australians from every field are doing great things in Asia and have been doing so for some time now. Our expatriate workforce is also rebalancing away from the US and UK towards Asia, so the good news is this community is only going to get bigger.  This highly educated and global savvy workforce can be harnessed to help produce a more Asia-ready Australia, but we need leadership from the government, education and corporate sectors to make this happen,” he said.

The report includes PwC data modelling which suggests that by 2030 there will be 450,000 Australians living and working abroad in Asia, representing one-third of our total expatriate community, up from approximately one-fifth of the total today.

“Given the paucity of available statistics on the number of Australians living and working abroad in Asia we believe our prediction is conservative,” Mr Kidley said.

“Our diaspora with Asia also includes more than just our expatriates in Asia. If we add the growing number of Australians who were once expatriates in Asia and have returned home to live and work that number would be significantly larger.

“It is also highly likely that increases to Australia’s cultural association, business ties, and networked relationships with Asia every year will see the year-on-year growth rate of this group increase.”

The report also provides a series of recommendations for government, the corporate sector, the education sector and individuals on what can be done to nurture, develop and tap this talent pool.

These recommendations have been developed by PwC in conjunction with a panel of Australian expatriates, including:

        • Sir Rod Eddington AO, Non-Executive Chairman, JP Morgan & Lion
        • Doug Chester, Lead Independent Director, Kim Heng Offshore & Marine Holdings, Former High Commissioner to Singapore
        • Christine Holgate, CEO, Blackmores
        • Rod Lappin, Senior Vice President – Data Centre Group, Lenovo
        • Melanie Brock, Director of Business Development, Crown Resorts
        • Simon Henry, Co-Founder, Juwai.com
        • Michelle Garnaut, Restauranteur, M Restaurant Group
        • Kurt Mullane, Executive Director, Asian Education Foundation
        • Matt Godfrey, President – Asia, Young & Rubicam
        • Paul Hart, Executive Director – Head of Commercial, Knight Frank Greater China
        • Grant Dooley, Head of Asia, Hastings Funds Management

“Australia must consider how to capitalise on the new skills, contacts and opportunities our expatriates have formulated in Asia, and help those returning to reintegrate into the Australian landscape in a way that takes full advantage of their unique knowledge of the region,” Mr Kidley said.

“The recommendations in our report would be best implemented within the framework of a bipartisan national plan that recognises and assists our expatriates to deliver value for the country.”

        The report recommendations include:

        • Compiling more accurate and comprehensive statistics on the size, location and demographic
        • profiles of Australia’s expatriate population;
        • Making a period of Asia language study mandatory for all Australian children to improve Asian literacy across the board;
        • Directing more resources towards teaching of Asian studies (history, business, politics, culture);
        • Utilising our Asian alumni to better educate boards and senior management on the Asian opportunity and arm them against domestic demands for short-term results.

Dr Prabath C. Ukwatte Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism Club

Sri Lanka Tourism Club Chairman, Dr Prabath C. Ukwatte, a founding sponsor and co-organiser of AHTIC, said: “We will be working with government ministries to deliver themed international tourism and family entertainment zones, and to open them up for foreign investment. The conference will be an ideal opportunity to explain what we will be doing and to attract international finance. The new relationship with Chinese investors and Henry Chen, the Founder of Asia Hotel Forum and pioneer Chinese investment introducer, is historical and it establishes AHTIC as an economic bridge between China and Sri Lanka”.

Henry Chen replied: “Agreed!  I’m delighted to be bringing this delegation. The opportunity is so self-evident, I can’t imagine any serious Chinese hospitality investor not wanting to take a good look at Sri Lanka.”

Tourism minister, Mr John Amaratunga, added:  “We are giving the Tourism Club’s plans our full backing. More zones for development will be announced in the future. We are accelerating and widening the scope for investors by actively making reforms to reduce bureaucracy. We want to speed up decision-making.” He said there would be new concessions and investment opportunities announced at AHTIC.

Mr Amaratunga says Sri Lanka wants to generate up to five million tourists by 2020 and increase tourism revenue to 10 billion dollars. That includes doubling the current number of rooms available and creating direct employment for 300,000.

As well as the Chinese delegation, AHTIC will bring international leaders of the hospitality industry to Sri Lanka. It will be a forum for three days of high-level discussion from across the region – speeches by prominent insiders, a unique chance to hear political leaders’ views first-hand, and opportunities to network with entrepreneurs and other successful individuals.

A demonstration of the growing co-operation between the public and private sectors is the opening AHTIC networking reception in Colombohosted by the President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, the conference patron. His Prime Minister, as well as the Tourism Minister, will give the opening speeches as the conference gets under way the following day.

AHTIC will take place, November 27 – 29, 2016, at the Hilton Colombo, Sri Lanka.

                International Youth Day

“The foundation of every state is the education of its youth”

                 ~Diogenes~

Young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are the leaders of today. A nation’s most valuable resource is its young people. Young people represent our national future and embody national prosperity. Youth require equal access to educational achievement that befits their innate ability no matter if they are from urban, rural or remote communities, regardless of their low socioeconomic, indigenous, homeless backgrounds, in situation of being a refugee or a young parent, in the juvenile justice system or in the care of the state.

International Youth Day (IYD) is the invention of the United Nations, and was first celebrated on 12th August 2000, after the UN General Assembly passed a resolution accepting the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon in 1998.It is celebrated annually on the 12th of August focusing on the rights of young people to have full access to education, adequate healthcare, employment opportunities, financial services and full participation in public life as well as their contributions.

The theme of the 2016 International Youth Day is ‘The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production’. This year’s International Youth Day emphasises on achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly on the leading role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable consumption and production.

Sustainable consumption involves the use of products and services that meet the basic needs of communities while upholding the needs of future generations. The growth and promotion of individual choices and actions that increase the eco-efficiency of consumption and minimise waste and pollution are critical for achieving equitable socioeconomic development. Yet, many young men and women face barriers to certain green consumption choices. Those barriers to sustainable consumption choices include the high prices of goods and services and a lack of information about the available options.

Increasing resource efficiency and moving toward sustainable production can contribute significantly in meeting the basic needs of all people, including youth, by making food, water and energy more accessible and affordable to those living in poverty. Investing in sustainable production also creates new markets and employment opportunities which help to achieve social inclusion in the societies.

World Assembly of Youth (WAY) works for the promotion of youth issues and youth organisations in programme areas such as: youth employment, environment, human rights, democracy, population, health, drugs, community development and leadership training. As an international-scaled organisation whose aims are not only at its contribution of actively resolving youth-related matters but also its coordination of national youth councils, WAY has been known for its concern towards welfare of youth, worldwide.

Acknowledging the International Youth Day, we encourage everyone, youth inclusive, to be proactive in working together in order to make effective changes in improving the wellbeing of young people. Let us support the youth initiatives by giving righteous voices that they deserve as it is not enough to hope only for a better tomorrow, instead, we must progressively act now. Change is in progress and the drive to its success is in the hands of young people.

                Happy International Youth Day!

Nestle Omega Plus and Yayasan Jantung Malaysia to Organize the 15th Walk-A-Mile, Raising Awareness for Heart Health

Preventative heart care needs to be a top-of-mind consideration for Malaysians.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Aug. 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — To encourage Malaysians to take action for their heart health now instead of much later when the symptoms of heart disease have already manifested, brands such as Nestle Omega Plus have made it their mission to be Malaysia’s heart health advocate. Saturday Sept 3 rd will see Malaysians young and old converge on Lake Gardens (Perdana Botanical Gardens) for Walk-A-Mile, Malaysia’s longest running walk for heart health advocacy, jointly organised by Nestle Omega Plus and Yayasan Jantung Malaysia (YJM).

Walk-A-Mile by Nestle Omega Plus Milk and YJM encourages Malaysians to move for heart health
Walk-A-Mile by Nestle Omega Plus Milk and YJM encourages Malaysians to move for heart health

“For the past 14 years, Nestle Omega Plus has reached out to Malaysians to take charge and care for their heart through Walk-A-Mile in collaboration with YJM and we look forward with great excitement to sharing heart healthy activities with everyone at Walk-A-Mile. Caring for your heart does need to be a big monumental step, simply taking the stairs or swapping sugary treats with fresh fruits and drinking two glasses of Nestle Omega Plus with added plant sterols daily to manage cholesterol can improve your heart health,” said Ng Su Yen , Business Executive Manager, Milks of Nestle Malaysia.

Preventative heart care is not a top-of-mind consideration for most Malaysian adults, as heart disease is usually perceived as an illness that affects the elderly 1 . Research has proven this is not the case – in fact, Malaysians in their thirties are now more likely to have arteries which are similar to a person aged seventy years old due to their lifestyles 2 . The sad conclusion is that Malaysians are simply succumbing to heart disease at a younger age.

For single parent, Linda Chan , 57, long working hours in her younger years coupled with regular seafood feasts now with her family when eating out pose a challenge for her to manage her heart health. To balance it up, she will try to be more vigilant with her diet the next day, such as opting for steamed dishes at home and drinking milk with added plant sterols to block cholesterol.

“I’ve had friends who passed away at the age of 37 from heart health issues, just gone in their sleep,” she recall ed . “Don’t think that heart disease or fatalities only happen to people at my age, cholesterol and heart problems don’t develop overnight and I would definitely urge my daughter to look into ways of managing her heart health as early on as possible.”

The 2015 National Health and Morbidity Survey revealed that nearly 20 million Malaysians above the age of 18 years are at risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which may in turn lead to the development of heart disease. One out of two Malaysians are suffering from high cholesterol. Heart disease manifests itself in many different forms — a heart attack, narrowing of arteries, abnormal heart rhythms, breaking down of the heart valve or heart muscle and degeneration of blood vessels, amongst others. Collectively they are known as cardiovascular heart disease, or CHD.

Holistic management of heart health comprise of regular medical check-ups, daily exercise and eating a balanced diet
Holistic management of heart health comprise of regular medical check-ups, daily exercise and eating a balanced diet

There are 3 key factors to manage your heart health holistically. Aim to get some form of physical activity every day — the American Heart Association suggests a combination of moderate and vigorous activity thirty minutes a day, five times a week. Anything that makes your body move and burn calories is considered physical activity. Walking more is a great way to improve heart health.

Even if you don’t have any heart issues, it’s important to not miss your heart health check-ups with your doctor. Ask questions about your numbers: blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate, blood glucose and weight. These numbers will help to provide a benchmark for upcoming check-ups.

Eat a balanced diet – at the dining table, aim to fill half your plate with vegetables and fruits, consume milk with added plant sterols to block the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream. Plant sterols are especially effective in lowering cholesterol levels — according to Heart UK, the Cholesterol Charity, plant sterols can reduce cholesterol levels by up to 10% when taken at optimal doses and as part of a diet low in saturated fat in just over 3 weeks. They are considered to be the most effective single food that can lower cholesterol as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Plant sterols can be found in small amounts in many grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, and seeds. However you may have to eat very large amounts of these items to have an effect on your cholesterol, with Nestle Omega Plus, you only need to drink two glasses a day to manage cholesterol levels.

Having a single platform with a customer-centric view helps Etiqa attract and retain insurance customers and grow revenues – Kamaludin Ahamad, CEO of Maybank Ageas Holdings Bhd (MAHB)

Etiqa worked closely with Informatica Partner, Emerio, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT Communications company, on the architecture, development, management and integration of the systems onto the MDM platform. The MDM system provides Etiqa with better control of its data, enabling the company to build a consolidated customer profile as it pursues new avenues of growth in a more open and competitive Malaysian insurance market.

“We have one platform for accessing, integrating, cleansing, and governing our customer data. This customer-centric view across general and life insurance lines of business plays a powerful role in helping Etiqa attract and retain insurance customers and grow revenues,” said Kamaludin Ahmad , Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Maybank Ageas Holdings Bhd (MAHB) .
